Linux is definitely being targeted with age verification in the build up to digital ID. Two bad corporate actors in the space are Ubuntu and IBM/Red Hat, so it will be interesting to see how the rest of the opensource community adapts to the California law (and Colorado?) for age verification with a $7,500 fine per each violation. And it looks like they want to add it in a suspicious way to try and push it to other distributions. I’m sure we’ll get a fork and more distributions saying you can’t use their software in California. The push to Rust by Ubuntu is also interesting, as it limits hardware and might possibly be a way to integrate agentic AI more easily? Consequently, Ubuntu has long been a distribution to avoid, so we’ll see how the corporate and government coercion for the control of Linux progresses.
