Video Shows Suspects Smoothly Install Credit Card Skimmers; Here’s How to Protect Your Money

Pretty slick. Though modern smart chip cards were supposed to use a unique number per transaction, though supposedly they can pull information from the chip to make a magnetic strip card for fraudulent transactions. I did some searches, but couldn’t find a good write up on how they exactly work, and there have been three revisions to the EMV technology, with version 3 being more secure and supposedly not hackable in this way. And a good way to protect yourself is to use contactless payments when available (with RFID blocking wallet), and you’re protected with your ATM card because of pin, so shield it so they can’t video you enter it. And just keep an eye on transactions to make sure you can lock your card down quickly. Also, my credit card company offers virtual credit card numbers for online transactions which you can use, lock, or delete after use. And most likely this is a service from MasterCard itself along with the various insurances and protections (similar with VISA I’d imagine). With virtual credit card numbers online, you can drop PayPal which has become a criminal enterprise lately with Honey stealing commissions (remember that PayPal talked about fining users for online speech they objected to at one point which caused a mass exodus and reversal).
