Ad Blocking and Avoiding Web Tracking

We’ve covered Tor Browser, but what can you do to protect yourself in your regular web browser. My favorite browser plugin tools are uMatrix and uBlock Origin. Now a warning, this will require some initial configuration on new sites that you visit to enable some functionality, but it’s worth the effort as you’ll be amazed how many servers are involved with just one website. And how all these third parties are tracking you. And with uMatrix, you have control on what sites will load, and what web elements. These are powerful tools with a lot of configurability, but instead of reinventing the wheel I’ll point you to a great tutorial below.

In a future post I’ll show you how to get a Raspberry Pi setup to be your recursive DNS server for your home network filtering ads, tracking sites, and malware sites while giving you privacy from upstream DNS servers which could be tracking you even though they say otherwise. Using docker containers, it’s very easy to setup and manage, and this will protect all devices on the network. And this is especially helpful with Android devices where Google doesn’t make it easy to use ad blocking. You can even throw in a VPN so you can connect to your home network when away from home to enjoy that same DNS server ad, tracking and malware site blocking while also giving you protection on public WiFi networks.
