Mikrotik Winbox 4 Beta

Mikrotik is a Latvian company that makes wonderful routers and switches, having gotten their start with wireless ISPs. Their hardware is very capable and affordable, and unlike the other megacorp providers they don’t drown you in fees for extra features. If the hardware supports the feature their RouterOS or SwOS will support it. And along those lines, they’re extremely fastidious in supporting their software and firmware with the only negative being you’ll need to put in a little more work in setting up their equipment and maintaining updates. Consequently, they update even more than Ubiquiti. Winbox is the application you can use to configure their equipment that works on Windows as well as under Wine, but with the new version there will native support for Linux and macOS as well. There is also a web server interface from the device, but the application is much faster to use, and they even have a color coded command terminal interface. The second link above has a podcast with a contract network engineer who uses Mikrotik with a lot of background information on the company and using their equipment with large customers. Consequently, I love my Mikrotik router used with an Ubiquiti access point, but I plan to eventually move to all Mikrotik equipment.
