Weather going around the southern tip of Africa is affecting shipping. An interesting thing about those containers lost in the water is they can be just below the surface and you might not see them until you impact one. I listened to a sailing podcast with a family that sailed around the world in a large catamaran, and they hit one and it did quite a bit of damage. It was right after the huge tsunami that hit quite a few years ago in the Pacific. I’ve also heard sailors report rogue waves in that region that flipped their boats and broke their mast. So not only is there the expense of time and fuel to take this route, but it comes with extra risks even for the larger vessels.
