I believe I remember reading about this a couple years ago in a short news article, but it shines a light on civil asset forfeiture and how some law enforcement agencies are robbing people without due process or cause. What’s interesting about this case was the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department was pulling over armored cars transporting legal business proceeds and stealing it while trying to launder it through the feds who would get a 20% cut and return 80%. At least these businesses had the resources to recover their property, but for regular citizens the cost to legally get your property back could exceed it’s value or they’ll offer you half back to promise not to sue them. It really boils down to people violating the trust and integrity of the offices they hold for which they should be held accountable.
Where this ended up.
And worth pointing out as many of us support law enforcement and the hard work they do, but don’t fall for their fishing questions or give up a lot of information in a traffic stop (don’t be the marine traveling with his life savings in cash cross country in the second video). And a further point, with the war on police, budgets, taking away civil immunity… the quality of law enforcement officers is not what it used to be, especially in some liberal cities as the really valuable veterans and mentors are departing.
And another outrageous example.
