Gnome Terminator

If you have to manage a bunch of servers or machines from the CLI, Terminator is a pretty impressive terminal emulator that allows for easy tiling, moving windows, custom layouts, and easy maneuvering between windows with ALT arrow. I’ve only just started playing with it, and it has a lot more functionality and plugins to explore. You could use GNU Screen or TMUX, but Terminator is much easier to navigate and reorganize. So if you have a lot terminals open at any given time, it’s worth a test drive.

What is Terminator?

At its simplest Terminator is a terminal emulator like xterm, gnome-terminal, konsole, etc. At its most complex it lets you fly… metaphorically at least. Take a look at the following list:

From the simple…

  • Arrange terminals in a grid-like structure
  • Tabs
  • Drag and drop re-ordering of terminals
  • Lots of keyboard shortcuts
  • Save multiple layouts and profiles via GUI preferences editor
  • Simultaneous typing to arbitrary groups of terminals
  • Extensible through plugins
  • Dynamic and customizable layouts

and lots more…
