A wonderful series on the biblical perspective of alcohol. Historically, wine was used to purify water, as components of fermented wine will kill bacteria in the water and water was a necessity of life. So wine was mixed with many parts water to one part wine, or the wine was boiled and turned into a paste devoid of alcohol and later mixed into water. Unmixed wine is referred to in the Bible as strong drink, and they only let the wine ferment a few days so the alcohol content was no where near what it is today as well as being reduced greatly by mixing with water. So a Christian today would do well to avoid strong drink which was used in pagan worship and led their users to become demon possessed and involved in debauchery. And the Bible clearly says drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of heaven.
Proverbs 20:1
1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler,
and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
