I’ve always wanted to get to the top of a 14er, so now living within reach of Pikes Peak we journeyed through Colorado to get there. Once we passed through the urban sprawl of the Denver area the scenery turned beautiful again and the drive was quite enjoyable. And the Colorado Springs area is extraordinarily beautiful as you make your way to Pikes Peak. The climb up through the tree layer which ends about 11,500 ft to the alpine tundra didn’t disappoint with wonderful views all around. And the top is quite developed with nice observation decks to take in the wonderful views. And as always God doesn’t disappoint with some interesting animal encounters as we took in His beautiful creation.
Like all the popular parks and attractions today, you’ll have to reserve a time window for your visit which costs $2. And because of the steepness of much of the road you’ll need to use your Low gear and take it easy on your brakes. At a station coming down an employee will use a laser thermometer to check your front brakes ushering you to a parking place if too hot. We didn’t have a problem but then I have upgraded disks and ceramic brake pads I installed when the first brake service was due. They also want you to have half a tank of fuel when entering the gate.
