A fire broke out at a facility owned by WB Electronics, a Polish defense manufacturer that produces components for drones used by the Polish and Ukrainian militaries, and authorities are investigating the possibility of arson after surveillance footage reportedly showed a masked person entering the site, Onet reported on August 31.
The fire started shortly after midnight in a production building at the facility located near the city of Skarżysko-Kamienna, according to a news outlet. A security operator alerted police shortly after an intrusion sensor was triggered on the premises.
Surveillance cameras recorded an unidentified person wearing a balaclava entering the WB Electronics facility by crossing the perimeter fence. A backpack and a sweatshirt were later found near the facility.
Poland’s Internal Security Agency and the Military Counterintelligence Service were also notified and became involved in the response. Still, authorities have not determined the cause of the fire and are considering arson among the possible scenarios.
“We are treating this matter extremely seriously,” a spokesperson for Poland’s intelligence services coordinator said, according to Onet.
Five firefighting crews responded to the incident and extinguished the blaze. The facility, which produces pump systems, was not operating when the fire began, and no injuries were reported.
WB Electronics is the core company of WB Group, Poland’s largest privately owned defense group. The company develops and manufactures several drones, including the FlyEye and FT-5 reconnaissance drones and the Warmate and Gladius loitering munitions.
WB Group systems have been supplied to both Poland and Ukraine, with FlyEye reconnaissance drones and Warmate loitering munitions among the company’s platforms used by the Ukrainian military.
The fire in Poland was the latest in a series of incidents reported at facilities linked to the European defense sector in recent weeks.
A blast rocked an ammunition factory in Bulgaria owned by EMCO on August 10. Later on August 13, another blast was reported at a facility owned by KNDS Ammo Italy. Both companies have deep defense ties with Ukraine. Still, no sabotage was suspected in these incidents.
