The War on Fixing Your Own Car

This made me think about our car and what services I’ve had to do. I actually had a very good dealership in California, Shingle Springs Subaru, where we had bought our 2014 Subaru Forester for $26k cash under the Costco new car program, no haggling and below dealer invoice (they get bonuses for volume). I think I had the dealer replace the battery with oil changes within the warranty period, but brakes I did myself. More recently I had to replace a hose assembly for the window washers and the electric door lock for the driver’s door which became intermittent due to age/wear, along with replacing the spark plugs which was interesting given the flat opposed 4 cylinder boxer engine. Nothing really too bad or out of normal wear and tear, and I do the oil changes with Subaru OEM synthetic oil and the Japanese OEM filters I find online which are superior to the American versions made by a third party… I have the Bluetooth Blue Driver OBD-II reader for any check engine lights, checking parameters, clearing…,, not really needed so far. So hopefully I can keep it running for quite a few more years as modern vehicles are trash spyware machines and not worth the money. And being retired, we really only put miles on it with road trips exploring Wyoming and neighboring states (70k miles). Though, what would we do if we needed to replace it today?
