Bitcoin Core has trashed their reputation, and more devs keep piling on with ridiculous arguments about filtering SPAM being akin to censorship, authoritarian control, and even going so far as saying it’s like stoning to death fornicators. There just is never a legitimate and logical reason given for changing OP_RETURN to 100,000 bytes from 80 (40 with Bitcoin Knots and adjustable by the user).

Consequently, some in the space are going along with downplaying OP_RETURN limits being upped to 100,000 bytes, by inferring it won’t make you culpable for holding child porn on your node. And it will get included, as past history with another cryptocurrency proved when they did the same exact change to OP_RETURN. The argument is you’ll need to have custom software to retrieve it, but if it’s sitting there intact and doesn’t need to be reconstituted, is that argument valid? One of the most popular ways the federal government uses to get rid of people is child porn being found on their devices, and once those charges are leveled most people are abandoned by everyone. And federal judges have historically put limits on your ability to put forth legitimate defenses, so this would be a damaging way to get node runners to quit while prosecuting some who persist, until only the megacorps in the space are running nodes and controlling the future of Bitcoin indemnified by the government, and corporate executives aren’t criminally prosecuted for the crimes of their corporation like individuals. So this is a significant threat to the future of Bitcoin if the community doesn’t fight back, but they are and Bitcoin Knots nodes keep increasing.
