Though as you read the article, it looks like the main reason is inbreeding which is a little comical. Consequently, you&#8217;re in the genetic database as well, so If royalty needs an organ I wouldn&#8217;t want to be found to be a match in that database. A study in 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11469-019-00123-z\">found<\/a> that up to 39 percent of marriages were consanguineous, meaning any relationship closer than second cousins. This is a persistent problem in Middle Eastern societies \u2013 Pakistan, Kuwait, and Qatar have even <a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/inbreeding-by-country\">higher<\/a> rates of consanguinity than the UAE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10924896\/#:~:text=In%20Arab%20countries%2C%20especially%20Saudi,diseases%2C%20and%20rare%20blood%20disorders.\">found<\/a> the rates of marriage between blood relatives are very high in these cultures because such weddings are thought to help with \u201cpreserving family structure and assets, facilitating marriage arrangements, fostering harmonious relations with in-laws, and economic benefits related to dowries.\u201d Arab cultures often believe marriages between close relatives are more stable, and the husband\u2019s family is more likely to assist with supporting a closely-related wife and her children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Abu Dhabi trial period, the tests were expanded to include 13 genes that are \u201cparticularly relevant to the UAE population.\u201d One of the inherited diseases prevalent among Emiratis is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/thalassemia\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354995\">thalassaemia<\/a>, a blood disorder that is much more common among children born to couples that turned out to be more closely related than they thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al-Marzooqi said one goal of the program is to build a \u201ccomprehensive genetic database specific to the Emirati population.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Genetic testing services for couples will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khaleejtimes.com\/uae\/uae-genetic-testing-mandatory-for-citizens-getting-married-in-abu-dhabi-from-october-1-2\">offered<\/a> at 22 primary care centers in the cities of Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra, and Al Ain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe integration of genetic testing as part of the premarital screening programme is a proud milestone for Abu Dhabi.
