You can make a lot more money if they&#8217;re using and needing to replace weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/06\/21\/defense-sector-labor-shortage-militatry-spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/06\/21\/defense-sector-labor-shortage-militatry-spending<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-divider ub_divider ub-divider-orientation-horizontal\" id=\"ub_divider_6b221f24-850c-432e-9b06-ffa9c3fe66f0\"><div class=\"ub_divider_wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; margin-bottom: 2px; width: 100%; height: 2px; \" data-divider-alignment=\"center\"><div class=\"ub_divider_line\" style=\"border-top: 2px solid #ccc; margin-top: 2px; \"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>By Hope King and Colin Demarest<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.axios.com\/zi-Jd0mu7trRnofeysX4z-iVwto=\/0x0:1920x1080\/1920x1080\/2024\/06\/18\/1718724468346.jpg?w=1920\" alt=\"A briefcase covered in camouflage print, on a red background.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Illustration: Sarah Grillo\/Axios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s an &#8220;unprecedented&#8221; scramble underway to find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/washington-dc\/2024\/02\/20\/highest-paying-jobs-industry-aerospace-defense\">defense industry workers<\/a>, per a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9625dbaa-5d36-4bee-8610-f16ab7ad6b1d?accessToken=zwAGGxmnTMLwkdOWJduqXTZL7tOGEPFqt61rHQ.MEQCIHIjVL7_C-j7gJzRYhXl5x6SojkEiNDU0qhIsBIEAMg0AiBL_BA__xm_6SGZbKYCyneWbwUYX-4m3W_jk1qLbQVngw&amp;sharetype=gift&amp;token=2662e6ee-88bd-4378-849a-61e644956ed5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FT<\/a> report andsurvey of nearly two dozen U.S. and European companies in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>Russia&#8217;s invasion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/06\/04\/biden-ukraine-russia-military-decimated\">Ukraine<\/a> more than two years ago coupled with evolving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/10\/10\/israel-palestine-hamas-companies-businesses\">geopolitical risk<\/a> have pushed global military spending to new highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2023, countries spent $2.4 trillion on defense in total \u2014 the most ever recorded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/publications\/2024\/sipri-fact-sheets\/trends-world-military-expenditure-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stockholm International Peace Research Institute<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>U.S. military expenditures represented 37% of the world&#8217;s share, trailed by China at 12%, Russia at 4.5% and India at 3.4%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>At the same time,<\/strong> defense giants have been on their heels after decades of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/aerospace-and-defense\/our-insights\/debugging-the-software-talent-gap-in-aerospace-and-defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">competition<\/a> with Big Tech over talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Driving the news: <\/strong>Businesses built to serve defense ambitions are now recruiting at the fastest rate since the end of the Cold War, the FT reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics,whose combined market cap exceeds $250 billion, have nearly 6,000 roles to fill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ten more major players are aiming to add roughly 37,000 positions altogether \u2014 or about 10% of their collective workforce \u2014 ranging from apprentices, engineers, software developers and analysts to senior executives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Nuclear Skills Delivery Group, a trade organization in the U.K., forecasts more than 30,000 new jobs will be needed in the nuclear sector alone this decade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The big picture: <\/strong>A trustworthy supply chain and reliable munitions production is critical to waging war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sloppy logistics, for example, crippled Moscow&#8217;s war machine in the opening months of the Russia-Ukraine war.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dependencies on foreign parts can also jeopardize critical technologies in wartime. To that end, the U.S. Army and Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govini.com\/insights\/2024-national-security-scorecard#:~:text=Govini's%20Annual%20National%20Security%20Scorecard,programs%2C%20and%20Defense%20Industrial%20Base.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have reduced<\/a> their reliance on Chinese suppliers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What they&#8217;re saying: <\/strong>Hiring and training have been &#8220;unprecedented in recent times,&#8221; Beccy Pleasant at the Nuclear Skills Delivery Group told FT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;We don&#8217;t adequately recognize or cultivate nontraditional career paths and skills, which are becoming more and more essential as warfare and defense technologies evolve,&#8221; U.S. Army Recruiting Command Chief of Innovation Col. Kristin Saling said at a public meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/govciomedia.com\/defense-board-to-pitch-solutions-for-closing-tech-talent-gaps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this spring<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What we&#8217;re watching: <\/strong>Apprenticeships, increased work flexibility and streamlined security clearance processes could help with private sector <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2023\/07\/the-old-days-of-the-defense-recruiting-are-gone-heres-6-things-industry-can-do-to-catch-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recruiting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meanwhile, government agencies and the armed services are rolling out incentives, such as bonuses for cyber talent, to attract and retain workers<em>.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talent exchanges \u2014 where troops <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcpas.osd.mil\/learning\/broadening\/publicprivatetalentexchange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">circulate<\/a> across private-sector, academic and military projects, as has been floated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2023\/03\/10\/pentagon-wants-to-spur-cyber-talent-exchange-with-tech-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pentagon<\/a> \u2014 couldalso grow the workforce pipeline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And the GOP platform has a commitment to more spending to enrich the OCGFC even further.
