It reportedly causes \u201cheightened sedation\u201d and \u201cprofound bradycardia,\u201d or slowed heart rate, according to researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medetomidine has consistently been found in street drug \u201cproducts\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/ap-us-news\/us-names-veterinary-drug-fentanyl-mixture-emerging-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alongside fentanyl<\/a>, heroin and xylazine \u2014 another tranquilizer commonly found in street drugs \u2014 following a recent outbreak of overdoses in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Chicago, according to the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfsre.org\/nps-discovery\/monographs\/medetomidine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CFSRE<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the \u2018zombie drug\u2019 feel like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The dangerous drug can give users a more powerful high, but high doses can cause the heart to slow and fail, leading to sudden cardiac arrest. Furthermore, experts warn that the overdose-reversal drug <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/crime\/fentanyl\/what-should-know-about-over-counter-narcan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">naloxone<\/a>, popularly known as Narcan, may not be effective in reversing an overdose from medetomidine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRight now, we don\u2019t have a drug to reverse an alpha agonist, which is the type of drug these sedatives are. You\u2019d want to provide rescue breathing. The most important thing is that you call 911,\u201d addiction medicine specialist Dr. James Besante told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NewsNation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besante says while Narcan may not reverse an overdose from medetomidine because it is not an opioid, it should still be administered to someone having an overdose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where is Medetomidine spreading?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The drug is worsening the scene in places like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/crime\/fentanyl\/philadelphia-opioid-crisis-kensington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kensington neighborhood<\/a> in Philadelphia, which is home to one of the biggest open-air drug markets in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medetomidine was first reported in Maryland at the end of 2022 and has now been reported in at least nine states across the U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While many are calling it the new \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/northeast\/tranq-the-zombie-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zombie drug<\/a>\u201d as it is a more potent version of xylazine, Besante urges people not to dehumanize drug users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are individuals with lives with families. Many of the clients I treat on a daily basis are incredible people.
