Reclaim The Net<\/a>)\u2014As of May 17, TikTok will start implementing new rules affecting content appearing on the app\u2019s For You feed (FYF), and the changes are prompted by concerns about so-called \u201charmful speech\u201d and \u201cmisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nFYF is vital for the visibility of content, since it opens and plays videos automatically when the app is launched, something TikTok refers to as its \u201cpersonalized recommendation system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A post on the company\u2019s site titled, \u201cFor You feed Eligibility Standards,\u201d reveals that content that is deemed as health or news \u201cmisinformation\u201d will be censored from this tab more stringently going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the health side, TikTok looks to clamp down on anything from videos promoting \u201cunproven treatments,\u201d dieting and weight loss, plastic surgery (unless related risks are included as well), videos allegedly misrepresenting scientific findings, to the very broadly defined content that is considered misleading, and \u201ccould potentially\u201d cause harm to public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clarity is not the announcement\u2019s strong suit, and so the new rules will tackle even such things as \u201covergeneralized mental health information.\u201d Also in the FYF \u201cdoghouse\u201d will be content that\u2019s found to be too focused on \u201csadness\u201d (including \u201csharing sad quotes\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then there\u2019s the blog post\u2019s \u201cexplanation\u201d that some types of content \u201cmay be fine if seen occasionally, but problematic if viewed in clusters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What this actually means is control of users\u2019 exposure to content at its finest: \u201cWe will interrupt repetitive content patterns to ensure it is not viewed too often,\u201d TikTok said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When it comes to hate speech, \u201coutlawed\u201d is now even \u201csome content\u201d that is deemed to be making insinuations or indirect statements about protected groups \u2013 such that \u201cmay implicitly demean\u201d them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dangerous activities and challenges are also banned from FYF \u2013 apparently only if they lead to \u201cmoderate physical harm.\u201d And if you\u2019d like your videos of people \u201cwearing only nipple covers or underwear that does not cover the majority of the buttocks\u201d to be featured, well, you\u2019re also out of luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other than disappearing from FYF, users who repeatedly post speech offending to TikTok\u2019s new rules content will get deranked in the app\u2019s search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There\u2019s sexually suggestive and graphic content (including fictional graphic violence), also defined in some interesting, at times overly vague, at others oddly specific ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And, naturally, the new rules deal with \u201cmisinformation\u201d and \u201celection integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the first category, \u201cnot eligible for FYF\u201d are \u201cconspiracy theories that are unfounded and claim that certain events or situations are carried out by covert or powerful groups, such as \u2018the government\u2019 or a \u2018secret society\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe second seeks to remove \u201cunverified claims about an election, such as a premature claim that all ballots have been counted or tallied; statements that significantly misrepresent authoritative civic information, such as a false claim about the text of a parliamentary bill.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
