By Noah Carl<\/p>\n\n\n\n Back in 2021, the Canadian academic Eric Kaufmann wrote<\/a> that his native country was swiftly becoming \u201cthe world\u2019s first woke nation\u201d. And over the last two years, it seems the trend has only accelerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a recent article<\/a>, Jordan Peterson identified Canada as being at \u201cthe forefront of the wave of woke lunacy threatening to swamp the entire Western world\u201d. And in a speech earlier this month, retired General Michel Maisonneuve lamented that the \u201cwoke movement\u201d is \u201cdestroying Canadian values\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As we all know, the woke are notorious for branding those who disagree with them as \u2018bigots\u2019 or even \u2018Nazis\u2019. (This cartoon<\/a> offers an amusing illustration.) So you\u2019d assume the last thing they\u2019d want is to be associated in any way with the actual Nazis from World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Apparently not. On September 22nd, Justin Trudeau invited a 98-year-old Ukrainian-Canadian man named Yaroslav Hunka to the parliament in Ottawa. Hunka was introduced<\/a> as a \u201cveteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians\u201d. Greeted with a standing ovation, he was described as a \u201cUkrainian hero\u201d and a \u201cCanadian hero\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Left out was the fact that Hunka fought with the Nazis<\/a> as a volunteer in the Waffen SS \u2018Galicia Division\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There seems to some dispute about whether or to what extent this particular unit was involved in atrocities. Wikipedia notes<\/a> that although it \u201chas not specifically been found guilty of any war crimes by any war tribunal or commission\u201d, the unit faces \u201cnumerous accusations\u201d, and goes on to list several atrocities in which it was allegedly<\/a> involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What is true is that by the time the \u2018Galicia Division\u2019 was formed in 1943, the Nazis and their collaborators had already murdered hundreds of thousands of Hunka\u2019s fellow citizens (mostly Jews and ethnic Poles). So regardless of exactly what his unit did during the war, fighting with the Nazis against the Soviets is hardly something a Western parliament should be honouring as \u201cheroic\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Indeed, \u201cheroic\u201d would have been to resist both the Nazis and the Soviets, as some Eastern European partisans did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n My point here is not that \u2018Ukrainians are Nazis\u2019. My point is that the Canadian parliament are taking us for fools. They honoured a man with \u2018associations\u2019 (to put it mildly) that in any other context they would have viciously denounced. Either that or they didn\u2019t do basic due diligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/jasonsblog.ddns.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-21.png\")
