But it&#8217;s not the only company or lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Earlier this month, three other major chemicals companies\u2014Chemours Co., DuPont de Nemours Inc., and Corteva Inc.\u2014announced they had reached an agreement in principle for about $1.18 billion to resolve allegations from about 300 drinking water providers that the companies had polluted many U.S. public drinking water systems with PFAS.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/3m-reaches-10-3-billion-settlement-over-us-allegations-of-forever-chemicals-contamination_5351453.html?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=TheLibertyDaily&amp;src_src=partner&amp;src_cmp=TheLibertyDaily\">https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/3m-reaches-10-3-billion-settlement-over-us-allegations-of-forever-chemicals-contamination_5351453.html?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=TheLibertyDaily&amp;src_src=partner&amp;src_cmp=TheLibertyDaily<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-divider ub_divider ub-divider-orientation-horizontal\" id=\"ub_divider_b0205fcb-3275-4ec3-94da-6d2e987637bf\"><div class=\"ub_divider_wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; margin-bottom: 2px; width: 100%; height: 2px; \" data-divider-alignment=\"center\"><div class=\"ub_divider_line\" style=\"border-top: 2px solid #ccc; margin-top: 2px; \"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/author-mimi-nguyen-ly\">Mimi Nguyen Ly<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chemical manufacturer 3M Co.&nbsp;has reached a $10.3 billion settlement with several U.S. public drinking water systems to resolve allegations of contamination of \u201cforever chemicals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.3m.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/1784\/3m-resolves-claims-by-public-water-suppliers-supports\">announced<\/a> Thursday that the agreement \u201cincludes present value commitment of up to $10.3 billion payable over 13 years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The $10.3 billion agreement would settle a case that had been scheduled for trial earlier this month over a 2018 lawsuit brought by the city of Stuart, Florida.&nbsp;The judge overseeing the case delayed the trial the morning it was set to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city&nbsp;alleged that 3M made or sold firefighting foams containing PFAS that polluted local soil and groundwater, and sought for more than $100 million for filtration and remediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stuart is just one of&nbsp;about 300 communities that have filed similar suits against companies such as 3M that produced firefighting foam or the PFAS it contained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3M itself is facing thousands of lawsuits alleging PFAS contamination that were not part of the latest settlement. Among the lawsuits are those filed by people with personal injury and property damage claims. U.S. states have also filed lawsuits citing damages to natural resources&nbsp;such as rivers and lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Not An Admission of Liability\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>3M said the money in the settlement will help \u201csupport PFAS remediation for public water suppliers that detect PFAS at any level or may do so in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company noted the settlement is \u201cnot an admission of liability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the agreement is not approved by the court or certain agreed terms are not fulfilled, 3M is prepared to continue to defend itself in the litigation. 3M also will continue to address other PFAS litigation by defending itself in court or through negotiated resolutions, all as appropriate,\u201d the company stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PFAS is an acronym for invisible man-made chemicals called per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, which are known for their resistance to grease, oil, water, and heat. They are colloquially referred as&nbsp;\u201cforever chemicals\u201d because they don\u2019t easily break down in the human body or the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PFAS are used in a wide range of products, including non-stick cookware, stain- and water-resistant fabrics and carpets, as well as cleaning products, paints, water repellents, and fire-fighting foams. High levels of PFAS have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/pfas\/health-effects\/index.html#:~:text=CDC%2FATSDR%20understands%20that%20many,may%20impact%20the%20immune%20system.\">linked<\/a>&nbsp;to health issues, including various cancers, hormonal dysfunction including reproductive issues, and adverse effects on immune function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have reached the largest drinking water settlement in American history, which will be used to help filter PFAS from drinking water that is served to the public,\u201d&nbsp;Dallas-based attorney Scott Summy, a lead attorney for the water systems suing 3M and other manufacturers, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe result is that millions of Americans will have healthier lives without PFAS in their drinking water.\u201d The settlement is subject to court approval, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3M chairman and CEO Mike Roman said the agreement \u201cis an important step forward\u201d for the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that 3M had announced in 2000 it would phase out&nbsp;PFOA and PFOS.
