And Jennifer Welch’s podcast is the absolute worst, but it’s interesting as they’re getting resistance for age verification on the march to digital ID and they’re working new angles. And he’s been working this angle for a while looking at all the articles he was involved with. And does the left need a spiritual renaissance? Seems they’re about their fathers business wholeheartedly: killing babies, letting criminals loose on their citizens, letting lawbreakers in the country… And they’re ramping up killing the rest of society to match their inspiration Canada, killing more citizens than the victims of gun violence in America…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senator Chris Murphy, Democrat of Connecticut, has a new book out, and he was on Jennifer Welch\u2019s podcast I\u2019ve Had It<\/u><\/a>, on September 21, to promote it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book\u2019s thesis is that Americans suffer from two deficits, a lack of personal power and a lack of connection, i.e., isolation , and that policy should be designed to repair both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy\u2019s remarks on the podcast that are now making the rounds online are about the latter point, and how it should be the government\u2019s job to regulate the internet so that you\u2019re spending less time alone on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy went on to list a number of policy projects that he believes would help people \u201cfeel more powerful,\u201d and that includes raising the minimum wage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why the minimum wage is so important,\u201d he said. \u201cRegulating the internet so that you\u2019re spending less time alone on Instagram should be an important government project,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey don\u2019t feel powerful at all, and they feel lonely,\u201d he said of the current state of affairs in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not go into how this would be done, what law or rule, or which agency would be in charge of making sure Americans are not alone on Instagram, or what they should be doing instead, and how the government would make sure they do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he did frame the problem of internet use as one of the reasons people feel less powerful and more lonely, and in his view, that makes them more susceptible to electing a president like Donald Trump. \u201cAnd if people are feeling more powerful and less lonely, then they are going to be less likely to fall for a bullshit demagogue like Donald Trump,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy\u2019s solution, he said, is to rebuild a healthy institution in your town. And he believes that\u2019s something the government should be involved in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople feel more connected\u201d if they have a community around them, he said, and then added, \u201cThat\u2019s why rebuilding a healthy institution, in your town should be a project that government is involved in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy has a record of backing digital ID online age verification and censorship bills<\/u><\/a>, such as the Kids Online Safety Act<\/u><\/a> and the Kids Off Social Media Act<\/u><\/a>, which would bar children from social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not clear how these oppressive legislative efforts would make people \u201cfeel more connected,\u201d but they would certainly make the internet a different place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy\u2019s comments about the role of government in people\u2019s online and offline lives are peppered with statements like, \u201cgovernment should build a set of rules in which people feel more powerful,\u201d and, \u201cyou are going to be stuck with people just like Trump until we build a nation that cares more about the common good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murphy\u2019s book, and the podcast appearance, are built on this thesis: people are unhappy and powerless, and that\u2019s why they elect a president he doesn’t like. And the solution is more online control.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
