With the last KDE update a couple days ago, my SonicDE<\/a> desktop was broken. The way they built it out it was SonicDE was using KDE packages with just some packages converted to their own packages for X11 (XLibre) support. And X11 support in KDE is due to be dropped with KDE version 6.8 due out in October, as they’ll be Wayland only from then on. I also have Cinnamon and XFCE desktop environments installed so I was mainly using Cinnamon as SonicDE is still experimental it’s good to have backups (Cinnamon seems better and I still had KDE Connect phone support). If I had to guess, KDE did something on their end to break the way SonicDE was building support on top. But with updates today, I noticed SonicDE was replacing a lot more packages with their own, but the update through Pacman failed. So I had deleted plasma KDE packages and sonicde-meta and then reinstalled sonicde-meta fresh which got me to a desktop but the window manager was broken. I ran another Pacman update and it pulled in some more updated SonicDE packages and the desktop environment was working properly, and now with new branding for the start menu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So SonicDE is probably starting to figure out that KDE is going to try sabotaging their project and they’ll need to maintain more packages themselves to keep on top of it, But kudos to them for ramping this up in a couple days, so come October when KDE drops Plasma 6.8, those of us who refuse to run Wayland and run XLibre can continue to still use KDE under the branding of SonicDE. And hopefully it will move into the regular Arch repos instead of SonicDE’s repo<\/a>. And it’s becoming more of a full DE project who can still pull in updates by the KDE Plasma team, though I would bet they’ll engineer the desktop in ways to make it difficult for SonicDE. It would be hilarious if the woke KDE project makes such a nuisance of themselves that devs move over to the SonicDE team and it moves on away from KDE altogether. The beauty of opensource, projects not keeping users happy is they can be forked with devs and users moving away from them. Later KDE!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

{Update} <\/strong>I have come across a couple bugs. One was I was messing with my computer monitor because I’ve had a couple backlight LEDs go out, and I screwed up the resolution (ordered a new monitor). The SonicDE monitor application wouldn’t properly change my resolution back, and I had to do it from the command line with xrandr. And their new Silver Dark theme leaves a few apps loading in light mode.
