Definitely a backpacking trip as it&#8217;s about 12 miles in. Trailwalker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trail Overview \u2013 Backpacking Island Lake in the Wind River Range<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are the trail stats I recorded (Alltrails was a little off from mine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Distance<\/strong>: 24.6 miles round trip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Elevation: <\/strong>Starting at 9,340 feet, topping out at 10,410 feet (with plenty of ups and downs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Total Elevation Gain: <\/strong>3,630 feet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Difficulty:<\/strong> Strenuous (This is a tough one)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trail has a lot of ups and downs. It\u2019s a workout, but the payoff is massive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting There: Elkhart Park\/Pole Creek Trailhead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your hike begins at the Elkhart Park\/Pole Creek Trailhead. From Pinedale, Wyoming:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Head east on W Pine St for 0.3 miles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn left onto Fremont Lake Road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow it for 14.3 miles (it becomes Skyline Drive)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn right into the Elkhart Park\/Pole Creek Trailhead parking area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/Pinedale,+WY\/Elkhart+Park,+Wyoming\/@43.0382817,-109.8929044,54m\/am=t\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x8757941e97cd81b3:0xca86f855bcb38e49!2m2!1d-109.8633501!2d42.8678809!1m5!1m1!1s0x8757f27e671465d3:0x6430d682ff3a8588!2m2!1d-109.7545961!2d43.0041129!3e0?entry=ttu&amp;g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDkxMS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Maps is accurate<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Detailed Trail Breakdown to Island Lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the detail of backpacking Island Lake in the Wind River Range:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Elkhart Park to Miller Park (3.3 miles)<\/strong>: You\u2019ll start in the forest. This is not the most exciting part but it will get better.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Miller Park to Photographer\u2019s Point (4.6 miles)<\/strong>: Things start getting more interesting. You\u2019ll hit some meadows and rock outcroppings. At Photographer\u2019s Point, the views are stunning. It\u2019s a sneak peek of more to come.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Photographer\u2019s Point to Seneca Lake Trail Junction (5.6 miles)<\/strong>: The trail starts to show its true beauty. You\u2019ll pass Eklund Lake and turn left onto the Seneca Lake trail.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seneca Lake Trail to Highline\/Continental Divide Trail Junction:<\/strong> You\u2019ll pass Barbara, Hobbs, Seneca, and Little Seneca Lakes. It\u2019s beautiful, but it\u2019s also where you\u2019ll feel the elevation. Make sure you stay hydrated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Final stretch to Island Lake:<\/strong> After joining the Indian Pass trail, you\u2019ll climb over a ridge and descend to a viewpoint that\u2019ll have you pulling your camera out. Island Lake spreads out before you, with peaks like Mount Helen, Mount Sacagawea, and Fremont Peak in the background.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/trailwalkertravels.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IslandLakeWy-1-819x1024.jpg?resize=819%2C1024&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"tent with lake and jagged mountains in background. Trailwalker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Camping at Island Lake Wind River Range<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here is my advice on camping:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The further north you go, the more privacy you\u2019ll find.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explore around the entire lake if you want a secluded spot most people tend to camp right when you reach the lake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not camp within 200 feet of lakes and trails (this is policy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No permits are required at this time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re heading into Titcomb or Indian Basins for camping, remember you\u2019re above treeline. It\u2019s exposed, and finding spots 200 ft from water and trails can be tricky. Bring a bear canister \u2013 there aren\u2019t many trees for hanging food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to Go and What to Bring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Best Time To Go Backpacking Island Lake in the Wind River Range:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Late July to early September. Snow can be present in July and late September.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountain-forecast.com\/peaks\/Wind-River-Peak\/forecasts\/4021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Check the weather <\/a><\/em><\/strong>as mornings are typically cold and thunderstorms are common though short-lived.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I went in early September and the weather was perfect and the mosquitos were minimal compared to my backpacking trip in mid-July to the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/trailwalkertravels.com\/\/cirque-of-the-towers-guide-to-backpacking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cirque of Towers in the Wind River Range<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, where they were voracious.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gear <\/strong>\u2013 Pack light but be prepared for changing weather. The fading light hits the front of Fremont Peak (the main peak in the image above), creating a stunning alpenglow effect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There\u2019s a hill behind the lake that is a perfect vantage point for capturing the entire lake with its surrounding peaks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get creative with your campsite selection (while following Leave No Trace principles, of course).
