Speaking by video to a smart-mobility summit in Tel Aviv this week, the Tesla and SpaceX founder described Neuralink’s brain-computer interface as a “Jesus-level technology,” explaining that restoring sight to the blind and movement to the paralyzed constitute “miracles in the scientific sense.”

It was meant as praise. It functioned as a confession.

The phrase tells us less about what Neuralink can do than about what its founder believes the technology means. Musk did not say his chips were impressive, or revolutionary, or even unprecedented. He said they belonged in the category of acts performed by the Son of God. That is not the language of a CEO hyping a product. That is the language of a man who has located his religion and is inviting the rest of us to convert.

Meanwhile, the announcement Musk made was almost the lesser news from the same gathering. Neuralink president and co-founder DJ Seo confirmed, as he has hinted before, that the company intends to implant its chip into “an otherwise healthy person” by 2030. The medical applications, in other words, are the on-ramp. The destination is consumer hardware in the human skull.

This is the convergence of the demonic and the transhumanist that many of us have warned about for years.

Borrowing the Vocabulary of the Church to Sell a Product

Christians have a specific word for taking what belongs to God and applying it to something else. The Second Commandment does not merely forbid carving statues. It forbids treating creaturely things with the reverence owed to the Creator. When a tech founder reaches for “Jesus” as a benchmark for his own engineering, he is not paying a compliment to Christianity. He is borrowing its furniture to dress up a sales pitch.

The Gospel of John records that when Jesus opened the eyes of the man born blind, the religious authorities were furious not because the miracle was insufficient but because they could not account for it.

“Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.” The miracles authenticated the claim. They were signs pointing to the identity of the one performing them.

A surgical robot threading electrode arrays into the visual cortex is not that. It may be remarkable. It may genuinely help suffering people. It is not the same category of act. Pretending it is does two things at once. It inflates the technology beyond what engineering can bear, and it deflates the meaning of the miracles to which it is being compared. Both moves serve the brand. Neither serves the truth.

The Healthy Patient Problem

If Neuralink’s work stopped at restoring function to quadriplegics and the blind, the ethical conversation would be narrow and largely sympathetic. Helping the paralyzed reach for a cup of water is a moral good. Even cautious Christian ethicists, who have warned for decades about the line between healing and enhancement, generally affirm therapeutic medicine that returns a damaged body toward its design.

That is not where Neuralink is going. DJ Seo first floated the healthy-person timeline at a Seoul conference last year, telling attendees the company envisioned a world in which someone otherwise healthy receives the implant within three to four years. Investor documents reported by Bloomberg lay out the long game. Twenty thousand surgeries a year by 2031. Five clinics. Three product lines. A billion dollars in annual revenue. None of that math works if the only patients are the ones who medically need the device.

Seo’s own description of what the consumer use case looks like is worth sitting with. He told reporters last fall that Neuralink users would eventually be able to query large language models “at the speed of thought, even faster than how you’re speaking, and being able to potentially get that information back through your AirPods, effectively closing the loop.”

Strip the engineering language away and the proposition becomes clearer. Voluntary brain surgery so that the user never has to be alone with his own mind again. So that the gap between question and answer, between desire and gratification, collapses to nothing.

The Pressure That Always Follows

Every technology that begins as elective ends as expected. The smartphone was a luxury, then a convenience, then a requirement for participating in ordinary commercial and civic life. Try renting a car or boarding a flight without one. The same pressure structure is already visible in the brain-implant conversation. Once a chip can offer faster recall, better language fluency, or seamless integration with the AI tools that increasingly mediate white-collar work, the unchipped will not be merely old-fashioned. They will be slower, less productive, less competitive in the labor market.

There was a movie in the 1990s called “Gattaca” that projected the path of transhumanism in which the unenhanced people were outcasts. They couldn’t get good jobs. They were pitied, ridiculed, and oppressed. While the movie itself painted a dystopian vision of a transhumanist future, the reality we’re facing may be worse.

This is not a paranoid projection. It is the explicit business plan of a company that intends to scale to twenty thousand implants per year. The “choice” to remain biologically intact will be a choice the way refusing a smartphone in 2026 is a choice. Technically available. Practically punishing.

The deeper question is what such a society does to the soul. Christian anthropology insists that the human person is a unity of body and spirit, fearfully and wonderfully made, created in the image of God. The body is not a chassis to be upgraded but a gift to be received.

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” Paul’s warning concerns moral defilement, but the principle reaches further. The body is not raw material.

Israel, the Setting, and the Audience

It is worth noting where Musk chose to deliver the “Jesus-level” line. He was addressing an Israeli government-hosted summit, beaming in from Texas. The venue almost certainly did not factor into his word choice. He has used religious language about his work before, and the phrase plays the same way in San Francisco or Davos as it does in Tel Aviv. What it reveals is the increasing willingness of secular tech leaders to raid Judeo-Christian vocabulary for branding purposes, confident that the audience will hear it as flattery rather than blasphemy.

This is the cultural moment American Christians keep being told does not exist. The faith that built Western medicine, Western universities, and Western law is now treated as a stock of metaphors available for any purpose. Save lives with brain surgery. Sell electric cars. Justify a political position. Christ becomes a unit of measurement.

The Real Question Is Not Whether the Chips Work

The technology will probably do impressive things. Noland Arbaugh, the first Neuralink recipient, has used his implant to play video games and design three-dimensional models with his thoughts. That is a genuine engineering achievement, and his life is genuinely improved by it.

Christians need not pretend otherwise to ask the harder questions. Can a healthy person consent to elective brain surgery without being deformed by the pressure to compete with the chipped? Will insurance plans, employers, and schools begin treating the implanted as the new baseline? What happens to prayer, contemplation, and silence in a world where the mind is hardwired to a chatbot through the user’s own skull?

There is a passage in Daniel that has nothing to do with neuroscience and yet seems to keep coming up. The prophet, called to interpret a dream about a great image of mixed materials, describes its feet as part iron and part clay.

“And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men, but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.” Whatever else that vision means, it captures something about hybridity. Iron and clay do not become one substance. They become a fault line.

Musk and Seo are building the iron. The clay is us. The question is not whether the resulting figure can stand. The question is what cracks when the weight comes down.

What a Faithful Response Looks Like

Conservatives and Christians should not pretend to be Luddites. Medical advances that restore function to the sick are properly celebrated. The same Scripture that warns against pride in human achievement also commends the healing of the afflicted, and the apostle Paul once told Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach’s sake. There is a Christian tradition of welcoming what God permits human ingenuity to discover.

But “Jesus-level technology” is not a phrase any believer should let pass unchallenged. The miracles of Christ were not engineering. They were divine. They identified Him as the one with authority to forgive sins, to overturn death, to remake the cosmos. Comparing a surgical implant to those acts is not flattery toward Jesus. It is a category error so large that it borders on the sacrilegious, even when no malice is intended.

The right posture is neither panic nor applause. It is discernment. Watch what Neuralink builds. Hold the company accountable when its claims outrun its results. Ask hard questions about consent, coercion, and what happens to the human person when the brain becomes another consumer product. And refuse, gently and firmly, the invitation to call any of it a miracle. That word is already taken.

Elon Musk is a spook, a created persona to achieve an agenda.
