I hadn’t seen a lot of reporting out of Mexico on the cartels, though its very dangerous to report as cartels have killed reporters in the past. My guess is if the CIA is killing cartel members, it’s for their interests in supporting their preferred cartel operation or leader. I had kind of thought they supported the Sinaloa Cartel which followed a lot of rules and kept a lower profile, but the former US service members involved with the Jalisco New Generation military wing<\/a> along with all the hardware they have makes you wonder about them as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CIA has significantly expanded covert operations against Mexican drug cartels, including alleged involvement in targeted lethal missions inside Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a report from CNN<\/a>, the CIA were involved in the March 28th killing of Francisco Beltran, an alleged mid-level Sinaloa Cartel operative known as \u201cEl Payin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beltran died when an explosive device hidden inside his vehicle detonated on a major highway outside Mexico City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexican officials confirmed the blast was caused by a device placed in the car, while sources told CNN the operation involved CIA personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2025, the CIA\u2019s elite Ground Branch unit has taken a more direct role in anti-cartel operations, moving beyond intelligence sharing into operational support and targeted strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The escalation follows President Trump\u2019s designation of major Mexican cartels, including Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation, as foreign terrorist organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report also states that the CIA has increased surveillance operations over Mexico and expanded its ground presence, though the number of operatives remains relatively small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shift appears to be driven in part by U.S. concerns that cartel groups have penetrated parts of the Mexican government and security apparatus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That tension surfaced recently after CIA operatives were reportedly involved in a meth lab raid in Chihuahua without full authorization from Mexico\u2019s federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exclusive: Earlier this spring, a mysterious explosion blew up a car carrying an alleged cartel operative in broad daylight, on one of Mexico\u2019s busiest highways, just outside of its capital city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a targeted assassination facilitated by CIA ops officers on the ground.\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico\u2019s leftist President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly objected to the raid, saying foreign agents cannot independently operate on Mexican soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, her government attempted to change the country\u2019s constitution to protect the cartels, saying any attacks would amount to an attack on the country\u2019s \u201csovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we want to make clear in the face of this designation is that we do not negotiate sovereignty,\u201d Sheinbaum said at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis cannot be an opportunity on the part of the United States to invade our sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CIA personnel were also present during the operation that killed Jalisco cartel leader \u201cEl Mencho,\u201d providing real-time intelligence and support, though Mexican forces carried out the strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump administration has made cartel destruction a central national security priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
