This was seen as delaying its full combat deployment.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/russsarmat.jpeg?itok=B_0AE6zb\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/russsarmat.jpeg?itok=B_0AE6zb\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/files.zhedge.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=1920,quality=75,format=auto\/https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/russsarmat.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Interfax was the first to report Tuesday&#8217;s new Sarmat test, with Russian President Putin in follow-up remarking that its range could exceed 35,000. And Reuters has followed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/russia-says-it-successfully-tested-its-new-sarmat-strategic-nuclear-missile-2026-05-12\/\">with<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Russia has \u200bsuccessfully tested \u200cits new Sarmat intercontinental \u200bballistic missile, \u200bSergei Karakayev, the \u2060commander \u200bof the strategic \u200bmissile forces, told Russian President \u200bVladimir \u200bPutin on Tuesday. <strong>Putin said \u200cthat \u2060Russia planned to put the \u200bSarmat \u200bon \u2060combat duty by \u200bthe end \u200bof \u2060this year<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The nuclear-capable Sarmat ICBM was previously touted by President Putin as being capable hitting&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;any target on Earth&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; and is widely believed to be by far the&nbsp;<strong>longest-range missile in Russia&#8217;s arsenal<\/strong>&nbsp;(or in the world for that matter). It&#8217;s been nicknamed by NATO the &#8220;SATAN II&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sarmat, which is in a &#8220;superheavy&#8221; class of missiles, has a short initial boost phase which gives it better ability to elude all conventional anti-missile defense systems, given this results in a much smaller window of time to track it. By design, its super long-range gives it the ability to reach targets thousands of [miles] away<strong>\u00a0in the United States or Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to its specifications, it&#8217;s by far the heaviest missile Russia possesses &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wionews.com\/photos\/can-fly-16000-miles-in-one-hour-how-deadly-is-russias-nuke-capable-satan-2-sarmat-missile-472592\">at over<\/a>&nbsp;200 tons &#8211; and heavier than all foreign&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dana916\/status\/1671547621180153865?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1671547621180153865%7Ctwgr%5E33a7f529afbf7a31b0afc80d555bca22f8bda3cf%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.zerohedge.com%2Fmilitary%2Fhalf-russias-strategic-missile-units-have-been-rearmed-hypersonics-putin\">competitors<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>This allows it to carry around 15 warheads, up to 750kt. (The bomb US dropped on Hiroshima was 15kt.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This would be&nbsp;<strong>enough to wipe out a country the size of France<\/strong>. It can also carry hypersonic missiles, rendering most missile defense systems ineffective.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It has long been in development &#8211; since 2009 &#8211; and has been in testing phase for many years, some test flights of which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/geopolitical\/us-believes-russia-conducted-satan-2-icbm-test-while-biden-was-ukraine\">may have<\/a>&nbsp;failed. The Sarmat has been touted as being able to&nbsp;<strong>reach speeds of nearly 16,000 mph<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putin early in the program described: &#8220;The new complex has the highest tactical and technical characteristics and is capable of overcoming all modern means of anti-missile defense.&nbsp;<strong>It has no analogues in the world and won&#8217;t have for a long time to come<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2757\ufe0f President Putin Receives Report on Successful \u2018Sarmat\u2019 Intercontinental Missile Test \u2013 Kremlin<br><br>The successful launch will allow the first regiment to be put on duty by the end of the year, according to the commander of the Strategic Missile Forces.<br><br>\ud83d\udcf9: Russian MoD <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6euvdKssds\">pic.twitter.com\/6euvdKssds<\/a> \u2014 RT_India (@RT_India_news) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RT_India_news\/status\/2054195611155751328?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But despite this rosy presentation of the Sarmat&#8217;s purported capabilities, it has faced an uphill battle from the start, and there were <strong>manufacturing problems being reported even nearly a decade ago<\/strong>. For <a href=\"https:\/\/jamestown.org\/russias-sarmat-icbm-faces-development-problems\/\">example<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The heavy, liquid-fueled Sarmat ICBM is being developed as a <strong>replacement for Russia\u2019s older R-36M missile (NATO Reporting name: SS-18 Satan)<\/strong>. The Sarmat\u2019s large payload will allow for up to 10 heavy warheads or 15 lighter ones, or as many as 24 hypersonic Yu-71 glide vehicles (<a href=\"https:\/\/sputniknews.com\/politics\/201606111041185729-russia-hypersonic-glider\/\">Sputnik News<\/a>, June 11, 2016). Production of the new missile and its prototype was entrusted to the Krasnoyarsk Machine Building Plant (Krasmash), which <strong>suffers from serious equipment depreciation issues\u2014in 2010, fewer than 20 percent of machines at its fabrication facility were less than 20 years old<\/strong> (T. V. Yankova, A. M. Ragozina, \u201cTechno-Economic Justification&nbsp;of Equipment Modernization at Krasmash,\u201d&nbsp;Actual&nbsp;Problems of Aviation and Cosmonautics, No. 6: 2, 2010). The quality and lead time of the order will depend on the modernization of the production facilities at Krasmash. Efforts toward this end have already started: more than 16 billion rubles ($274 million) will reportedly be invested by 2019.
