This idea is nuts. For one thing, you’re letting someone put this at your home with you responsible for the power consumption, but they control the rental rates. It’s like solar, which might have been economical to pay itself off with enough time, but that usually comes at the time for a technology refresh. But you have no control over the rate the utility pays you, which was severely reduced in some markets. And solar has issues as installers usually go out of business leaving you in trouble with repairs, having trouble selling your home, needing to remove the solar panels for new roofing… And with high power draws, remember you are responsible for the electrical connection to your home which can be an expensive repair, and you’ll have to eat the RF exposure from these high power draws… And I have an old Dell PowerEdge server to play with, and the cooling fans on it are loud, though with a python script they can be made quieter, but it has to get rid of a lot of heat if really processing. And you’ll probably have techs for the company needing access to your property for certain maintenance and repairs… And what happens if the company goes out of business? Your rent payments stop coming? When someone picks up the equipment will they repair your house? But I bet the door to door solicitors will try to sell it like the solar companies…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

California-based startup Span has developed XFRA, a distributed AI-compute network that turns unused electrical capacity in residential homes and small businesses into miniature data centers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may be one of the more ingenious workarounds yet from tech bros, as traditional data-center buildouts are increasingly delayed or canceled<\/a>, not only because of permitting bottlenecks and grid constraints, but also because of rising local opposition<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across parts of the country, ordinary folks are watching power bills surge, while AI hyperscalers are set to splurge $700 billion<\/a> on data center buildouts this year alone. XFRA appears to be a convenient sidestep of local opposition by tech bros, transforming homes into miniature data center nodes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cComprising a distributed network of compute nodes located in residential and small commercial spaces, XFRA enables both the immediate and future compute needs of hyperscalers, neoscalers and AI cloud providers,\u201d Span revealed earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPAN says XFRA is already running revenue-generating test units and plans a 100-unit test later this year, with broad U.S. deployment planned for 2027. This deployment next year could scale to more than 1 gigawatt of AI inference compute capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a LinkedIn video, Span CEO Arch Rao says each node contains Dell PowerEdge servers with 16 Nvidia RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell GPUs, 4 AMD EPYC CPUs, and 3 TB of RAM, connected to a 24-port gigabit switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the XFRA White Paper<\/strong>, Rao outlined how XFRA would install an \u201cenergy and compute system, including SPAN panel, whole-home battery backup system, along with the XFRA compute Node, at no cost to homeowners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The white paper then describes how homeowners benefit from a backyard data center: \u201cXFRA pays the homeowner a monthly rental to subsidize their energy and high-speed broadband bills such that they are a fraction of what they would normally be. This offers homeowners a sizable discount, and predictability in their monthly billing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

News of the backyard data center concept first circulated earlier this month. The topic resurfaced on Tuesday when CNBC<\/a> reported that Nvidia and homebuilder PulteGroup are helping SPAN install mini data centers in homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
