It&#8217;s kind of funny that the US government does this to some of their own citizens coming back into the country, though without the criminal offense. If you refuse, the US takes your device until they can image it, mailing it to you later. And Apple and Google leave vulnerabilities unpatched so government tools can break the phone&#8217;s encryption, with the one exception being Graphene OS. But good to be mindful of traveling with your computer and data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/2026\/04\/americans-traveling-hong-kong-will-now-face-arrest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/2026\/04\/americans-traveling-hong-kong-will-now-face-arrest\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-divider ub_divider ub-divider-orientation-horizontal\" id=\"ub_divider_bcba430a-773d-426d-96bb-0afcdafe42f2\"><div class=\"ub_divider_wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; margin-bottom: 2px; width: 100%; height: 2px; \" data-divider-alignment=\"center\"><div class=\"ub_divider_line\" style=\"border-top: 2px solid #ccc; margin-top: 2px; \"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>By Jim H\u1d0fft<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_1547289\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hong_kong_international_airport_terminal_1_-11-1200x630.jpg\" alt=\"Busy airport terminal with travelers walking past shops and gates, featuring clear signage for flights and amenities.\" class=\"wp-image-1547289\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 1.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The era of privacy is officially over in the \u201cNew Hong Kong,\u201d and if you\u2019re an American traveling abroad, you are now a target for the Communist-controlled regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/hk.usconsulate.gov\/security-alert-2026032601\/\">warning issued by the U.S. Consulate,<\/a> Americans entering or even transiting through Hong Kong could now face criminal charges simply for refusing to unlock their phones or provide passwords to authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under newly updated enforcement rules tied to Hong Kong\u2019s sweeping National Security Law, police now have the authority to demand access to personal electronic devices, including phones and laptops, on the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s the catch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Refusing to comply is now a criminal offense<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Penalties include up to one year in prison and fines of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/03\/lifestyle\/hong-kong-police-force-tourists-from-us-to-reveal-device-passwords\/\">roughly $12,000+ USD<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ce8j9yj52lro\">\u201cfalse or misleading information\u201d<\/a> could lead to even harsher prison sentences up to 3 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies to everyone, residents, tourists, business travelers, and even passengers just passing through the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/hk.usconsulate.gov\/security-alert-2026032601\/\">U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macao<\/a> issued the following alert:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>On March 23, 2026, the Hong Kong government changed the implementing rules relating to the National Security Law. It is now a criminal offense to refuse to give the Hong Kong police the passwords or decryption assistance to access all personal electronic devices including cellphones and laptops. This legal change applies to everyone, including U.S. citizens, in Hong Kong, arriving or just transiting Hong Kong International Airport. In addition, the Hong Kong government also has more authority to take and keep any personal devices, as evidence, that they claim are linked to national security offenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Actions to Take:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong &amp; Macau if you are arrested or detained.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mytravel.state.gov\/s\/step\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0to enroll in the updated STEP to set your preferences and continue receiving alerts and messages from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage friends and family traveling or living internationally to enroll in STEP. Travelers may choose to sign up for alerts for individual trips or to receive alerts long-term for specific countries where they or their loved ones are visiting or residing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the State Department\u2019s Bureau of Consular Affairs on social media (@travelgov) as well as the nearest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usembassy.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. embassy or consulate\u00a0<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinese officials have already lashed out at the U.S. for issuing the warning, accusing Washington of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-protests-us-alert-over-security-rules-change-hong-kong-2026-03-29\/\">\u201cinterfering\u201d<\/a> in Hong Kong\u2019s internal affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Hong Kong authorities insist the new rules are necessary for \u201cnational security.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You definitely don&#8217;t want to take devices you have a lot of information stored on, nor give up passwords.
