Is the military presence at the port cartel related? Was an enemy cartel moving drugs through the port? I have a <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonsblog.ddns.net\/index.php\/2025\/02\/22\/how-cartels-actually-operate-in-america-drug-trafficking-sicarios-and-high-ranking-members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post<\/a> with an interview of a former Sinaloa Cartel dealer who shed light on how government officials in Mexico are paid handsomely. (Markus Scholz\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By Virginia Grace McKinnon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The House of Representatives passed&nbsp;bipartisan&nbsp;legislation&nbsp;to grant the president authority to limit U.S. port access for countries that have seized American property abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Congress remains bitterly divided on the SAVE America Act and funding for the Department of Homeland Security, the Defending American Property Abroad Act of 2026 passed with bipartisan support. The bill, introduced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2026\/03\/26\/latest-divide-right-reconciliation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas,<\/a> passed by a vote of 247 to 164.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s House passage of my&nbsp;Defending American Property Abroad Act of 2026&nbsp;is a necessary step to protect American businesses and workers from unfair treatment overseas,\u201d Pfluger told The Daily Signal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>My Defending American Property Abroad Act just PASSED the U.S. House!<br><br>When countries violate trade agreements and illegally seize assets from U.S. companies, it puts American job security, economic security, and national security at risk. August Pfluger (@RepPfluger) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepPfluger\/status\/2037541457540608028?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 27, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The impetus for Pfluger\u2019s legislation was a&nbsp;longtime&nbsp;dispute&nbsp;involving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2026\/02\/24\/border-patrol-union-blames-biden-for-cartels-possession-of-military-grade-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mexican government<\/a> and a U.S.-owned port in Mexico.&nbsp;Lawmakers say that Mexico has&nbsp;violated&nbsp;the USMCA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2025\/07\/28\/trade-deal-deadline-approaching-for-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trade agreement<\/a> by&nbsp;attempting&nbsp;to&nbsp;seize&nbsp;control of a port operated by&nbsp;Vulcan Materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vulcan Materials Company,&nbsp;based in Alabama,&nbsp;is one of the nation\u2019s largest producers of construction aggregates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pfluger&nbsp;has raised concerns about this dispute since 2022, but in March 2023, Vulcan\u2019s deep-water port at Punta Venado was seized by the Mexican government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen countries violate trade agreements and illegally seize assets from U.S. companies, it puts American job security, economic security,&nbsp;and&nbsp;national security at risk. This legislation is critical because it ensures there are enforceable consequences for those actions,\u201d Pfluger&nbsp;said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Mexico is using its military to illegally occupy the property of an American company, Vulcan Materials. This facility and port are critical to our trade and security strategy, which is why I\u2019m leading an effort to deter Mexico from fully seizing this facility and ensure they face\u2026\u2014 Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (@RepBethVanDuyne) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepBethVanDuyne\/status\/1838248728307597817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 23, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt sends a clear message to any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2026\/03\/01\/we-are-going-after-the-rest-trump-gives-big-update-on-iran-strike-by-the-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">foreign government<\/a> that the United States will not tolerate this behavior,\u201d Pfluger continued. \u201cWe will defend our economic interests, uphold the rule of law, and stand firmly behind American companies&nbsp;operating&nbsp;abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation stipulates that ships may&nbsp;be&nbsp;restricted&nbsp;from&nbsp;entering&nbsp;U.S. waters&nbsp;or unloading at&nbsp;U.S. ports without the president\u2019s approval if these vessels previously stopped at&nbsp;ports&nbsp;previously owned by U.S.&nbsp;entities&nbsp;but later taken over by foreign governments in&nbsp;the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaker Mike Johnson&nbsp;congratulated&nbsp;Pfluger on the&nbsp;House&nbsp;passage of the legislation. \u201cU.S. investments abroad have long been essential to both our economic development and national security,\u201d Johnson, R-La., claimed, \u201cand this legislation takes a crucial step to protect and defend U.S. business interests globally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am thrilled to see this pass with overwhelming bipartisan support,\u201d Pfluger said, \u201cand I will continue advocating for it until it passes through the Senate and is signed into law.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t remember seeing this covered in the news before, and it&#8217;s significant that Mexico is trying to take this port using their military.
