And notice what they pay these firms to collect signatures. What was once a grass roots method to put a referendums on the ballot when legislators didn&#8217;t want to do their job has become a workaround for special interests to get their legislation put directly to the voters, who often times can be persuaded with good marketing. Referendums should be abolished. Let the legislators be forced to do their jobs, go on record for their votes, and get replaced by citizens for not fulfilling their duty on behalf of voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/2026\/03\/caught-broad-daylight-ballot-initiative-signature-gatherers-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/2026\/03\/caught-broad-daylight-ballot-initiative-signature-gatherers-california\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-divider ub_divider ub-divider-orientation-horizontal\" id=\"ub_divider_b975e20c-92a7-4000-8fcd-d8bfe7d1e9a8\"><div class=\"ub_divider_wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; margin-bottom: 2px; width: 100%; height: 2px; \" data-divider-alignment=\"center\"><div class=\"ub_divider_line\" style=\"border-top: 2px solid #ccc; margin-top: 2px; \"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>By Brian Lupo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/jj-smith-signature-gatherers.jpg\" alt=\"Individuals engaged in paperwork at a community event, showcasing collaboration and organization in a vibrant urban setting.\" class=\"wp-image-1536689\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, street videographer <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/war24182236\">JJ Smith<\/a> captured on camera what appears to be election crimes in San Francisco, California.&nbsp; In broad daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The video shows a line of people at the corner of 6th Street and Mission Street in the SoMa neighborhood, soliciting signatures on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The clip begins with Smith walking up on the line with a sign that reads, <strong>\u201cCan you read &amp; Write?&nbsp; Sign Petition for $5.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith asks a man in the line, \u201cWhat\u2019s the line for?\u201d&nbsp; He responds that they\u2019re \u201cgiving five bucks to sign a petition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Smith asks the two women seated at the table, \u201cI get $5 too?\u201d&nbsp; She replies, \u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The woman responds, \u201cJust sign it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The woman can then be seen highlighting a paper for another woman in the line but off camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFirst name is going to be Carol, last name Sanderson.&nbsp; This is the address right here.&nbsp; This is the city, Avila Beach, and this is the zip code,\u201d she tells the woman.&nbsp; As the woman takes the paper and pen to sign it, the worker says, \u201cSo remember, first name is \u2018Carol&#8217;\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\ud83c\udfa5Mar09 2026 1:54pm Location<br>6th &amp; Mission<br>These people are paying people $5 dollars to sign a ballot, but as you watch the video their telling them what name to sign (which is someone else name) and what address to write. Why not sign your own\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GIHdLHaHCl\">pic.twitter.com\/GIHdLHaHCl<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 jj smith (@war24182236) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/war24182236\/status\/2031116014361211312?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 9, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In a news interview with KCRA 3 News, Smith said he sat there for two hours and watched hundreds of people come and go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Laura Powell, a civil liberties attorney on X, the video \u201cappears to show signature gatherers for ballot initiatives sponsored by Building a Better California.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuilding a Better California is an advocacy group with an associated political action committee (PAC) founded with $35 million from Google co-founder Sergey Brin, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and numerous other billionaires,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/organization\/building-a-better-california\/\">InfluenceWatch.org.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe group is widely speculated to have formed to combat a proposed wealth tax on billionaires in California, although as of February 2026, Building a Better California was officially neutral on the issue,\u201d states InfluenceWatch.org.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Powell wrote that, \u201c[A] Spokesperson for Building a Better California Abby Lunardi told me via email [that] they were aware of the video and have contacted the signature-gathering agency to reject any petitions from the circulator in the video.&nbsp; She emphasized, \u2018We do not tolerate this or any type of fraudulent activity in the signature-gathering process.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding the spokesperson, Lunardi, InfluenceWatch.org describes her as \u201cthe chief marketing officer of Truity, a personality and career testing service\u201d and notes that she previously worked for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative as the chief communications and brand officer.&nbsp; The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is infamous for injecting over $400 million into the 2020 Election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\ud83d\udea8 NEW<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This video appears to show signature gatherers for ballot initiatives sponsored by Building a Better California\u2014a recently formed political group bankrolled by prominent tech billionaires\u2014offering homeless people $5 cash to sign petitions, using names other than their\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2fdZ44ebCc\">https:\/\/t.co\/2fdZ44ebCc<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 Laura Powell (@LauraPowellEsq) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LauraPowellEsq\/status\/2031183393783001252?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 10, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley Zavala of KCRA 3 News reported on Smith\u2019s video and confirmed the signature-gatherers were doing so for an initiative that is \u201cbacked by billionaires fighting a proposed wealth tax.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another campaign they were gathering for was a proposed retirement and personal savings protection act.&nbsp; Zavala said all three campaigns involved acknowledged their petitions were being carried by these signature-gatherers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zavala said campaigns hire firms to gather signatures for anywhere between $15-17 per signature; however, she notes that they still don\u2019t know why those signature-gatherers have voter information or where the extra money came from to pay the people to sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to KCRA 3, those campaigns are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Building a Better California<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Californians For a More Transparent and Effective Government<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a campaign for the Retirement and Personal Savings Protection Act<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Update:<br>CA Secretary of State is investigating possible petition fraud.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/war24182236?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@war24182236<\/a> posted the video pointing it out in SF.
