(DCNF<\/a>)\u2014A majority of Canadians now view the U.S. as their country\u2019s top security threat \u2014 ranking it above China, Russia and Iran \u2014 according to a shocking new survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The poll, conducted for Bloomberg<\/a> by Nanos Research Group, found 55% of Canadians<\/a> believe the U.S. currently poses the greatest risk to Canada\u2019s national security. Only 15% selected China, while 14% named Russia and 2% chose Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The survey followed a series of confrontations between Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Donald Trump, including tariff disputes, clashes over NATO and the president\u2019s push to control Greenland<\/a>. Ottawa has simultaneously sought to deepen economic and diplomatic ties with China\u2019s communist regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results also revealed a gender divide, with roughly 64% of women naming the U.S. as Canada\u2019s primary threat, compared to 45% of men. The survey of 1,009 adults was conducted Jan. 31 through Feb. 4 and has a margin of error of about 3.1 percentage points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A separate survey released Thursday by Politico<\/a> found that a majority of Canadians no longer view the U.S. as a reliable ally. The poll also found that 67% say the U.S. challenges rather than supports its allies around the world, and 69% agree the U.S. tends to create problems for other countries rather than solve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos in late January, Carney said the long-standing U.S.-led \u201crules-based international order\u201d has become a \u201cfiction,\u201d warning the world is now in a geopolitical \u201crupture\u201d where major powers increasingly act without constraint. In response, Trump withdrew<\/a> Canada\u2019s invitation to his newly launched Board of Peace<\/a> to oversee the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as well as the rebuilding of Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carney\u2019s remarks followed a diplomatic trip to China, where he announced new strategic partnerships and praised the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe world has changed much since that last visit, I believe the progress that we have made in the partnership sets us up well for the new world order,\u201d the prime minister of Canada declared<\/a> during his visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the trip, Carney\u2019s government announced a \u201cnew strategic partnership\u201d with China, focused on energy, agriculture and trade. Under the agreement, Canada allowed nearly 50,000 Chinese electric vehicles into its market, and set what it had called \u201can ambitious goal to increase exports to China by 50%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump responded by warning<\/a> Carney \u2014 whom he referred to as \u201cgovernor\u201d \u2014 that Canada could face a 100% tariff if it \u201cmakes a deal with China.\u201d The president has periodically joked about Canada becoming the 51st state, which has fueled political backlash inside the country.

Carney\u2019s government has also unveiled<\/a> a defense-industrial strategy designed to steer more military procurement toward Canadian firms rather than relying as heavily on U.S. contractors, arguing that the country must reduce long-standing strategic dependencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
