Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the CEO of the mega trade and logistics company DP World, has resigned from his position after he was named in documents of Jeffrey Epstein, who referred to the Dubai businessman as a \u201cclose personal friend<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DP World<\/a> announced the move Friday morning, saying Essa Kazim has taken over the role of Chairman and Yuvrah Narayan has been named the company\u2019s CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bin Sulayem\u2019s name was redacted in some emails in the Epstein files, but Rep. Thomas Massie<\/a>, R-Ky., named him as the recipient of an email Epstein wrote, telling him he \u201cloved the torture video.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epstein and bin Sulayem appeared to have a decades-long relationship\u2014often discussing lewd topics, including sex, intimate massages and escorts\u2014with Epstein telling him in a 2013 email<\/a>, \u201cYou are one of my most trusted friends in (every) sense of the word. You have never let me down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bin Sulayem, who has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing related to Epstein, shared similar verbiage, referring to Epstein as a \u201cvery dear friend<\/a> and a business associate of mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same year, bin Sulayem said in an email to Epstein he \u201chad a very nice time at your island<\/a>,\u201d thanking him for letting Epstein use his plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They exchanged emails from 2007 until 2019, the year Epstein killed himself in a New York City prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who Is Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bin Sulayem<\/a>, 71, led DP World to $18.3 billion in revenue in 2023, with assets totaling $44.7 billion. He is considered among the top CEOs<\/a> in the Middle East. DP World, a company bin Sulayem had led as CEO since 2016, reportedly contributes toward more than a third of Dubai\u2019s GDP<\/a> and 12% to all of the UAE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dp World\u2019s Partners Called For Action Against Bin Sulayem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Quebec\u2019s pension fund, La Caisse, said earlier in the week it had paused<\/a> its partnership with DP World, urging the company to \u201cshed full light on the situation and take the necessary actions,\u201d according to the Montreal Gazette. British International Investments, which CNBC reported invests<\/a> alongside DP World in four African ports, also paused its partnership, saying in a statement it was \u201cshocked by the allegations emerging in the Epstein files regarding Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bin Sulayem\u2019s Relationship With Donald Trump<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The UAE tycoon has longstanding business ties <\/a>to President Donald Trump through Dubai\u2019s state-owned real estate developer Nakheel, which he chaired and which signed a licensing agreement in 2008 to build Trump-branded properties in the emirate. Companies linked to bin Sulayem have intersected with Trump\u2019s private business interests, including DP World\u2019s sponsorship of the DP World Tour<\/a>, which has hosted tournaments at Trump\u2019s golf courses in Scotland. He has also commented on Trump\u2019s trade policies<\/a>, reflecting his proximity to global business networks connected to Trump\u2019s administration and private enterprises. Epstein and bin Sulayem referenced Trump in emails, including in 2017 when bin Sulayem asked Epstein if he should accept an invitation to Trump\u2019s inauguration<\/a>. They also wrote about Steve Bannon, a former aide of Trump\u2019s, with Epstein writing<\/a>, \u201cWe have become friends you will like him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sulayem Helped Epstein Purchase Private Island<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Miami Herald first reported that bin Sulayem was listed as the beneficial owner in Epstein\u2019s acquisition<\/a> of Great St. James in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Epstein had struggled to purchase the island directly because of his criminal history, but completed the $22.5 million acquisition through companies tied to Sulayem\u2019s name. Emails and records show Epstein sought Sulayem\u2019s assistance in promoting plans to develop the island into a private resort<\/a>, reflecting Epstein\u2019s efforts to leverage relationships with powerful global executives to finance and commercialize his properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bin Sulayem\u2019s Ties To Prince William<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DP World was a founding corporate partner and major donor to Prince William\u2019s Earthshot Prize<\/a>, an environmental award that awards $1 million annually to innovative projects addressing climate change, pollution and conservation. Bin Sulayem publicly backed the initiative and appeared alongside Prince William at Earthshot events in Dubai, but their partnership has been scrutinized following disclosures in the Epstein files, prompting Britain’s Charity Commission to review<\/a> the charity\u2019s funding relationship. Graham Smith, chief executive of anti-monarchy group Republic<\/a>, wrote, “William has lots of questions to answer about what he knew about Andrew and Epstein. And now he must explain his relationship with Sulayem.\u201d Prince William\u2019s uncle, the former Prince Andrew, was stripped of his royal titles last year over his ties to Epstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
