Strikes were also reported at an airport and military base in Hadhramaut&#8217;s city of Seiyun.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The attacks came as forces backed by Riyadh launched an offensive to reclaim territory taken over by the STC in December.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hadhramaut&nbsp;governor,&nbsp;Salem al-Khanbashi, said that the Yemeni government now had full control of the province.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have regained full control of all Hadhramaut territory, expelled STC forces, and begun administering duties and normalising life,\u201d Salem al-Khanbashi told reporters.&nbsp;<br><br>The pro-government Nation\u2019s Shield Forces (NSF) confirmed that they had given a safe corridor for the STC fighters to withdraw toward Aden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said STC forces were allowed to leave the city, carrying only personal arms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Footage broadcast by Yemen TV showed government forces operating from al-Rayyan International Airport, a day after government forces seized control of the eastern al-Mahra province from the STC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, al-Mahra and&nbsp;Hadhramaut provinces account for nearly half of Yemen\u2019s territory and share borders with Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 16 December, following weeks of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/explainers\/war-yemen-who-stc-uae-saudi-arabia-houthi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">escalating tensions<\/a>&nbsp;in Yemen&#8217;s eastern regions, STC claimed control over Hadhramaut and al-Mahra governorates as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/countries\/saudi-arabia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saudi<\/a>-backed forces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseliney.net\/posts\/358\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">withdrew<\/a>&nbsp;from their military bases in Aden.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSF had shifted from their military bases in the south-western governorates of Aden, Lahj, Abyan, and al-Dhali to the area between al-Wadiah and al-Abr in the east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A military spokesperson for the STC last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/people-killed-saudi-air-strikes-southern-yemen-say-separatists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told <\/a>AFP that the group was now in a &#8220;decisive and existential&#8221; war with Saudi-backed forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, with the latest strikes, the control seemed to have shifted from the UAE-backed STC back into the hands of the Saudi-led&nbsp;NSF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSF supports the&nbsp;Presidential Leadership Council, Yemen&#8217;s internationally recognised authority led by President Rashad al-Alimi, and has been in conflict with the separatist group STC.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UAE and Israel ties<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The STC\u2019s stated political goal is to secede and re-establish an independent Southern Yemen, as it existed before the 1990 unification.&nbsp;The separatist group is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/explainers\/war-yemen-who-stc-uae-saudi-arabia-houthi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supported and funded<\/a>&nbsp;by the UAE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/saudi-arabia-bombs-uae-shipment-yemen-and-calls-out-emirati-role\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bombed&nbsp;<\/a>an Emirati shipment in southern Yemen and called out the UAE\u2019s role in backing the separatists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Riyadh targeted a shipment that had arrived in the Yemeni port of Mukalla on two vessels originating in Fujairah, a port city on the east coast of the UAE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/uae-backed-southern-yemen-separatists-hold-independence-referendum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UAE-backed southern Yemen separatists to hold independence referendum<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Saudi foreign ministry said it was disappointed by actions taken by the UAE, \u201cpressuring\u201d the STC\u2019s forces to conduct military operations on Saudi Arabia\u2019s southern border, in Hadhramaut and al-Mahra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, STC fighters seized control of Socotra, a strategic chain of islands along a key shipping route between Europe and Asia,&nbsp;where both the UAE and Israel have been involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/uae-yemen-somalia-circle-bases-control-gulf-of-aden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">constructing military bases<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israeli systems&nbsp;on the islands allow the UAE to monitor and thwart attacks launched by the Houthis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>STC&nbsp;has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/yemen-southern-secessionists-face-backlash-over-talk-ties-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signalled <\/a>a willingness to normalise relations with Israel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, the group said it&nbsp;will&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ajmubasher\/status\/2007152494086889873?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hold a referendum<\/a>&nbsp;on independence amid deadly fighting with&nbsp;Saudi Arabia&nbsp;and its Yemeni allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The STC&#8217;s announcement on a referendum came after Israel unilaterally recognised the breakaway Somali region of Somaliland as an independent state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Somaliland has deep military and political ties to the UAE.
