So the only way to be more quantum safe with Segwit is to create a new wallet seed, and move your coins there and not transact. This might be a good option for a big holder if you have millions or more, but the wallet is exposed as soon as you transact. But since we are a long way away from quantum computers, there&#8217;s no reason to be worried about this at present. And we&#8217;ll most likely have some early warnings if the technology advances as well as changes to the Bitcoin protocol with quantum safe cryptography. And worth pointing out, there are much more tempting targets with a lot more return on investment if quantum computers with sufficient power were developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com.au\/news\/willy-woos-guide-to-guard-against-the-bitcoin-quantum-threat-131671\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/cryptonews.com.au\/news\/willy-woos-guide-to-guard-against-the-bitcoin-quantum-threat-131671\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-divider ub_divider ub-divider-orientation-horizontal\" id=\"ub_divider_aa56f912-2612-422b-93fc-cfd2df7dc3f7\"><div class=\"ub_divider_wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; margin-bottom: 2px; width: 100%; height: 2px; \" data-divider-alignment=\"center\"><div class=\"ub_divider_line\" style=\"border-top: 2px solid #ccc; margin-top: 2px; \"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>By Jos\u00e9 Oramas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cryptonews.com.au\/2025\/11\/12131140\/111225-quantum-computer-bitcoin-1200x675.jpeg\" alt=\"Bitcoin cryptocurrency blockchain being destroyed by a quantum computer\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source:AdobeStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Willy Woo recommends moving Bitcoin to an unspent SegWit address (bc1q) to hide the public key from future quantum threats.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The risk is that quantum computers could use exposed public keys to derive private keys, and Taproot addresses (bc1p) expose this key.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some users argued this is an impractical, temporary fix that requires the coins to remain untouched until the Bitcoin network fully upgrades.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com.au\/category\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> analyst Willy Woo is telling his followers they can lower future <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com.au\/category\/quantum-computing\/\">quantum-computing risk<\/a>, basically by moving coins into a SegWit address and\u2026 well, leave them there until the network adopts quantum-safe cryptography.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woo <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/woonomic\/status\/1988050039424610387?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">said<\/a> that the present-day taproot addresses (the prefix that starts with bc1p) are not safe as they embed the public key into that address. \u201cNot good,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, users should create a new SegWit wallet with \u201cbc1q\u201d, and not bc1p. Once done, just send all your money there and wait to see if the Bitcoin network upgrades to a quantum-safe protocol, Woo claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-big-scary-quantum-computers-or-bsqc\">Big Scary Quantum Computers, or BSQC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>His point is that powerful quantum machines could one day derive private keys from exposed public keys. Taproot outputs can reveal a public key up front, while classic SegWit keeps the public key hidden behind a hash until the coins are spent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cryptonews.com.au\/2024\/04\/16134706\/Willy-Woo.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:109px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>In the past it was about protecting your PRIVATE KEY (your seed phrase). In the age of big scary quantum computers (BSQC) that are coming, you need to protect your PUBLIC KEY also. Basically a BSQC can figure out your private key from a public key.<\/em> &#8211; <em>Willy Woo, Bitcoin analyst.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Woo, however, noted this is just a temporary solution and not a fix. And it\u2019s quite impractical as holders wouldn\u2019t (or shouldn\u2019t) spend or move their coins from the SegWit address because doing so reveals the public key on-chain, defeating the purpose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that large custodians, like ETFs, corporate treasuries, and cold storage, can improve safeguards before a protocol upgrade arrives if they adjust their operational setups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On timing, Woo referenced the prevailing view that practical quantum threats are unlikely before 2030 and noted that quantum-resistant standards are already advancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-so-when-do-we-start-panicking\">So, When Do We Start Panicking?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everyone agreed with Woo. Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole, argued the approach is inadequate and that Bitcoin needs a network-level upgrade as soon as possible. He warned that suggesting a seven-year window risks complacency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Willy you know this isn&#8217;t a solution. Segwit is no protection model. We need to upgrade the network ASAP, and these kind of posts suggesting we have 7 years would mean the network collapses first. Bitcoin can adapt, but we need to see a lot more traction on that now and really\u2026\u2014 Charles Edwards (@caprioleio) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/caprioleio\/status\/1988057577377460606?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 11, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>SegWit (Segregated Witness) is a BTC protocol that changed how data is structured and stored by separating transaction signatures from transaction data, making transactions easier and faster to process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But SegWit addresses just provide a temporary advantage against quantum attacks. Basically, the main threat from quantum computing is that such a device is sufficiently powerful to use Shor\u2019s algorithm to break Bitcoin\u2019s ECDSA, its current cryptographic signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, Quantum computing isn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2208.07219\">considered<\/a> a threat yet because there aren\u2019t enough qubits and, most importantly, such computers don\u2019t have the stability to maintain their quantum state consistently over time without being disrupted by errors.
