(Courtesy Sanger Cattle Co.; Jimmy Emerson via Flickr)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A cattle rustling mystery is brewing just south of the Wyoming border in Weld County, Colorado, where at least 14 Black Angus cows are missing and presumed stolen from several ranches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspected thefts, which occurred in early October involve multiple herds northeast of Greeley, said the Weld County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The cattle are believed to have been taken some time around the beginning of October; however, the exact timeframe varies,\u201d the Weld County Sheriff\u2019s Office said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weldsheriff.com\/Public-Interest\/2025-News\/Media-Release-Dec.-112025\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>statement<\/u><\/a>. &#8220;Three separate herds were affected, each with different last-seen-together dates and different grazing locations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Colorado Brand Inspector is investigating the case, the Sheriff\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad Sanger, who owns the 3,000-acre Turnkey Cattle Company, said nine cows in his 180-head herd, worth as much as $36,000, are missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe cows didn\u2019t just walk off the ranch,\u201d said Sanger, who is perplexed by the thefts and noted there are no holes in the fences at his ranch that would have allowed criminals access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanger said he discovered that the cattle were missing during a preconditioning period to strengthen&nbsp;the health of newborn calves and initially thought he had miscounted his herd or some had wandered off to nearby ranches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, when he talked with two neighbors, he learned that they did not have his cattle and were missing a total of nine cows themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.imgix.net\/Missing-cattle-brands-12.13.25.jpg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;q=75&amp;auto=format%2Ccompress\" alt=\"At least 14 Black Angus cows have vanished from multiple ranches northeast of Greeley, Colorado. Ranchers suspect theft as authorities investigate the baffling disappearances.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other Disappearances<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ranch hands at another large Weld County operation told Sanger that 29 of their cows had also disappeared. It isn\u2019t clear whether the ranch has notified the Weld County Sheriff\u2019s Office of the missing cattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of the cattle missing from Sanger\u2019s&nbsp;ranch are steers or bulls, causing him to speculate that cows, worth up to $4,000 each, were targeted for breeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The loss of the cattle represents a significant financial blow for Sanger, whose ranch is a labor of love for his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy goal is to preserve the Western way of life, which seems like it\u2019s fading,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Art Guttersen, who owns a 35,000-acre ranch in Weld County, said his operation has not been affected by the suspected thefts but hopes those responsible will be brought to justice. \u201cIn Weld County, we take that very seriously and will make a good example of them,\u201d he said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Missing cattle in Colorado are not uncommon. In 2024, 180 cattle went missing along the Uncompahgre Plateau, southwest of Montrose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cattle from the latest cases all carry brands, Sheriff\u2019s officials said, that ranchers can look out for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brands include one featuring an \u201cS,\u201d one featuring a \u201cW\u201d and another that spells out \u201cVIS,\u201d according to the Weld County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone with information about missing cattle in Weld County should contact the Sheriff\u2019s Office at 970-356-4015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.imgix.net\/Missing-cattle-12.13.25.jpg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;q=75&amp;auto=format%2Ccompress\" alt=\"At least 14 Black Angus cows have vanished from multiple ranches northeast of Greeley, Colorado.
