Founded in 2012, the organization creates products and programs to empower the platforms and people who have the ability to defend children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"History\">History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DNA Foundation was founded in 2009, by film and television actors <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demi_Moore\">Demi Moore<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ashton_Kutcher\">Ashton Kutcher<\/a>. At that time, Moore was viewing an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MSNBC\">MSNBC<\/a> documentary on human trafficking and sexual slavery of children in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cambodia\">Cambodia<\/a>. While later researching some of the issues that were presented in the film, she was inspired to act when she learned that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Child_pornography\">child pornography<\/a> and the sexual slavery of children were taking place not only in Cambodia, but in the United States as well.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thorn_(organization)#cite_note-msn-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When DNA Foundation was established, the name of the organization represented the couple, along with their joint commitment to addressing human trafficking. On November 15, 2012, the name of the organization was changed following the dissolution of the founders&#8217; marriage.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thorn_(organization)#cite_note-huffpost-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> As of 2012, they remain with the organization as co-founders.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thorn_(organization)#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> The members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Board_of_directors\">board of directors<\/a> of Thorn include Moore and Kutcher; as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ray_Chambers\">Ray Chambers<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_Secretary-General\">United Nations Secretary-General<\/a>&#8216;s Special Envoy for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malaria\">Malaria<\/a>; and Jim Pitkow, co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Attributor\">Attributor<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thorn_(organization)#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 2023, Kutcher resigned from the organization after sending a letter to a judge requesting leniency in the sentencing of his former costar <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Danny_Masterson\">Danny Masterson<\/a> who was convicted of two counts of rape.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thorn_(organization)#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, Thorn&#8217;s hiring of two former <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europol\">Europol<\/a> officials in 2022 was the subject of an investigation by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Ombudsman\">European Ombudsman<\/a> for potential violations of the conflict of interest rules by Europol.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thorn_(organization)#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Programming\">Programming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thorn works with a group of technology partners who serve the organization as members of the Technology Task Force. The goal of the program includes developing technological barriers and initiatives to ensure the safety of children online and deter sexual predators on the Internet. It has become crystal clear in our efforts that technology plays an increasingly large role in this crime and in the sexual exploitation of children overall.
