For the first time in history, a rainbow pride cross was officially processed into the heart of the Vatican after hundreds of LGBTQ Catholics attended mass in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica, with the blessing of Pope Leo, who personally encouraged the vice president of the Italian Bishops\u2019 Conference, Bishop Francesco Savino, to celebrate with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 1,400 LGBTQ Catholics and their families have descended on the Vatican over the last week, making a pilgrimage for the 2025 Jubilee, a major Roman Catholic event celebrated every 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with the general revelry, they\u2019ve been attending events specifically geared for the that have been published on the Vatican\u2019s official online calendar, including the prayer vigil at the Jesuit Church of the Ges\u00f9 and the mass at St. Peters, which appeared under the unnsasuming title \u201cPilgrimage of the Tenda di Gionata Association (Jonathan\u2019s Tent) and other associations\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These events are sponsored by Jonathan\u2019s Tent<\/em>, a pro-LGBTQ activist group dedicated to advocating for full acceptance, inclusion, and celebration of LGBTQ Catholics in the life of the Church. The group is named \u201cJonathan\u2019s Tent\u201d because they believe Jonathan and David had a homosexual relationship<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Folks entered the churches carrying the pride cross and wearing rainbow pride gear, including some folks adorned with \u201cF*ck the rules\u2019 shirts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to those gathered crowd at St. Peters, Bishop Savino said of the Jubilee event and those in attendance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was the year when land was returned to those from whom it had been taken. The Jubilee was the remission of debts and the liberation of slaves and prisoners. The Jubilee was the time to free the oppressed and restore dignity to those who had been denied it. Brothers and sisters, I say this with emotion. It is time to restore dignity to everyone, especially those who have been denied it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
