Four days later, both sides are reeling from attacks on key infrastructure and shuttered industries, including in the fertilizer sector,\u201d AgriPulse notes. \u201c\u2018Iran has shut down seven of its urea and ammonia plants,\u2019 said Mark Milam, senior editor for fertilizers at Independent Commodity Intelligence Services, over concerns that they could be potential Israeli targets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/combine.jpg?itok=gJ5M9VTo\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJosh Linville, vice president of fertilizers at commodities analysis firm StoneX, said that attacks on the country\u2019s natural gas infrastructure \u2013 which is used in the production of urea \u2013 is also keeping operations offline,\u201d Ward reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIran was the third-largest urea exporter in 2024, according to StoneX, with export volumes of around 4.5 million tons \u2013 about the size of China\u2019s. <\/strong>The country has a production capacity of around 8.9 million tons a year, Milam added, serving markets in Turkey, Brazil and Argentina, among others. It is also an exporter of ammonia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition to knocking Iranian urea production offline, the attacks also brought Egypt\u2019s operations to a standstill,\u201d Ward reported. \u201cIsrael reduced its natural gas flows to the country on Friday, prompting Egypt to cease production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/news\/after-israel-strikes-iran-heightened-focus-wartime-premiums-fertilizer-market\">AgWeb\u2019s Margy Eckelkamp reported<\/a> that \u201cLinville\u2019s colleague at StoneX, Arlan Suderman, details why this conflict is being watched so carefully if the concern isn\u2019t in those two countries\u2019 production. \u2018There\u2019s a lot of other producers of fertilizer in the Middle East and a lot of it also passes through the Strait of Hormuz, which will be at risk going forward now,\u2019 Suderman says. From a global supply standpoint, Suderman also points out the Ukrainian attack of one of Russia\u2019s largest nitrogen fertilizer plants two weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With ongoing and new conflicts and strikes in key fertilizer production areas, Linville foresees needing to be focused on the potential outcomes,\u201d Eckelkamp reported. \u201c\u2018For now, we don\u2019t believe there\u2019s going to be much in the effect in terms of fertilizer production from either country, though it would be a little silly to not consider it, so we\u2019re watching very, very closely,\u2019 he says.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until then, <strong>BYD and its rivals may continue to dominate Brazil\u2019s green-car movement from across the Pacific<\/strong>, even as the long-promised benefits of local EV manufacturing remain out of reach for many Brazilian workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*&nbsp; *&nbsp; *<a href=\"https:\/\/store.zerohedge.com\/clean-ground-beef-box\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agri-pulse.com\/articles\/23060-middle-east-conflict-throws-more-uncertainty-into-global-fertilizer-markets\">Ward reported<\/a> that \u201ccompounding availability and price worries, the analysts said, is China\u2019s continued pullback from exporting fertilizers. Both China\u2019s phosphate and urea exports are lagging historical levels. China typically exports around 5.5 million tons of urea annually, but this year, Linville said, Beijing will only allow around 2 million in exports.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018You\u2019ve got so many different pieces,\u2019 Linville said, driving uncertainty over urea supplies,\u201d Ward reported. \u201cU.S. farmers are somewhat insulated from short-term price shocks given many will not be buying fertilizer in earnest until later in the year.
