Well, it appears the lidar system in a new Volvo is strong enough to fry a smartphone camera. And with big government driving assist systems. cars are utilizing radiation to do many things including gauging cars around you and in front, e.g. adaptive cruise control and blind spot presence&#8230; Sitting on stop and go traffic might not be good for your health. And they won&#8217;t properly research 5G for health impacts, so don&#8217;t count on any safety studies on these systems. While invisible to the human eye, these beams can damage smartphone camera sensors, as one Reddit user recently discovered the hard way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reddit user <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Volvo\/comments\/1ke98nv\/never_film_the_new_ex90_because_you_will_break\/?utm_source=embedv2&amp;utm_medium=post_embed&amp;utm_content=whitespace&amp;embed_host_url=https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/news\/volvo-ex90s-lidar-sensor-will-fry-your-phones-camera\">Jeguetelli<\/a><\/em> recently shared a video on the <em>r\/Volvo<\/em> subreddit showing a smartphone camera&#8217;s image sensor being fried after filming the front-mounted lidar sensor on the Volvo EX90\u2014a fully electric, seven-seat luxury SUV that serves as Volvo&#8217;s flagship entry into the electric vehicle market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Never film the new Ex90 because you will break your cell camera.Lidar lasers burn your camera<\/strong>,&#8221;&nbsp;Jeguetelli wrote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/2025-05-15_14-29-33.png?itok=a8aCAxWN\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Auto blog <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/news\/volvo-ex90s-lidar-sensor-will-fry-your-phones-camera\">The Drive<\/a> <\/em>pointed out, &#8220;It should be said that the risk here is inherent to lidar technology, and has nothing to do with Volvo&#8217;s specific implementation on the EX90. The lidar, being a laser based system, uses infrared light waves that may cause damage to certain camera devices. This can include smartphones or phones equipped with a camera.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Would this damage your car&#8217;s backup camera, if a LIDAR equipped car tailgates you?<\/strong>&#8221; one Redditor asked.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another person said, &#8220;<strong>Thank god for Apple Care.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ongoing debate in the tech world centers on LiDAR vs. cameras\u2014a big divide in the race toward fully autonomous vehicles, especially when comparing Tesla&#8217;s camera-only approach to rivals embracing LiDAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elon Musk famously called LiDAR a &#8220;crutch,&#8221;<\/strong> arguing that camera vision powered by advanced AI is sufficient for FSD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In my view, it&#8217;s a crutch that will drive companies to a local maximum that they will find very hard to get out of.&#8221; Musk said several years ago, adding, &#8220;Perhaps I am wrong, and I will look like a fool.
