And New Mexico has some problems from the little bit of Nick Johnson&#8217;s videos I&#8217;ve seen showing their crime and drug problems. This is a fast lane to let organized crime infiltrate our country and law enforcement to make America more like the countries the migrants came from. Michelle Lujan Grisham on April 7 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.state.nm.us\/2025\/04\/07\/governor-lujan-grisham-signs-60-bills-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/Sessions\/25%20Regular\/final\/SB0364.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate Bill 364<\/a>, which opens the door for anyone with a federal work permit to serve as a cop. In 2024 alone, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/data\/i765_application_for_employment_fy24.xlsx&amp;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued<\/a> over two million new work permits to non-citizens \u2014 many through hotly debated parole <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/06\/23\/joe-biden-parole-system-million-migrants-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">programs<\/a> with major oversight flaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last several years, New Mexico has experienced an exodus of cops and a spike in crime, something Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story <a href=\"https:\/\/kfoxtv.com\/news\/local\/police-chief-pleads-for-bigger-force-as-violence-soars-46-hefty-bonuses-for-new-recruits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attributes<\/a> to the anti-police sentiment stemming from the George Floyd riots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s an objective fact. You look at our application numbers over time, you can look at state police, Albuquerque or even Portland. It has a lot to do with the environment or the climate around policing especially from 2020 on,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lascrucesbulletin.com\/stories\/its-tough-being-a-cop,114063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> the Las Cruces Bulletin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Mexico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/rankings\/crime-and-corrections\/public-safety\/violent-crime-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has<\/a> the highest rate of violent crime in America and the lowest percentage of violent crimes that are <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.csgjusticecenter.org\/tools-for-states-to-address-crime\/50-state-crime-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">solved<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), an organization that supports stricter immigration laws, argues that allowing illegal non-citizens to become police officers is not a reasonable solution to these problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is illogical to place people who are violating our laws in a position of enforcing laws against others,\u201d FAIR spokesman Ira Mehlman said in a statement to the DCNF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mehlman also pointed out that federal law \u201cprohibits illegal aliens from possessing firearms, which law enforcement officer must carry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, even though non-citizens who become law enforcement officers in New Mexico will presumably now be in a position to carry a firearm, Grisham had previously suspended Second Amendment rights in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmhealth.org\/publication\/view\/rules\/8430\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued<\/a> an executive order banning citizens from carrying guns in Albuquerque that even David Hogg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/david-hogg-blasts-new-mexico-governor-over-emergency-order-banning-carry-of-handguns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opposed<\/a>. The executive order expired in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the bill\u2019s main proponents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.police1.com\/legal\/n-m-passes-law-to-allow-eligible-non-citizens-to-serve-in-law-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> it would address the state\u2019s police shortage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith fewer recruits entering the profession and more officers retiring or leaving for other opportunities, law enforcement agencies have struggled to maintain adequate staffing levels. SB 364 opens the door for individuals who might otherwise have never considered a career in law enforcement \u2014 people who are already working, living and contributing to our communities but were previously excluded from this essential work,\u201d Sen. Cindy Nava, one of the bill\u2019s co-sponsors, said when the legislation was introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Mehlman said that allowing non-citizens to join police ranks presents a host of vetting issues: \u201cIn some cases, it is impossible to do any sort of background check, especially those who come from countries that may be adversarial or hostile to the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New York Times&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/25\/business\/new-mexico-michelle-grisham-crime.html?unlocked_article_code=1.kE4.sZNF.ouPRFgCMkQYr&amp;smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describes<\/a> Albuquerque, New Mexico\u2019s largest city, as a place where \u201cpeople in drug-induced psychosis wander into busy streets and parking lots, oblivious to traffic.\u201d One store alone has had seven murders in the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not having enough police officers leads to crime, according to Chief Story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey can\u2019t take the time to do traffic enforcement, go around and look for crimes to occur or try to prevent crimes, that needs to happen, we need to have officers and the time to go and make sure that people aren\u2019t committing crimes, decent traffic enforcement, do special enforcements on retail theft to avoid shoplifting, there\u2019s a number of things,\u201d Story <a href=\"https:\/\/kfoxtv.com\/news\/local\/police-chief-pleads-for-bigger-force-as-violence-soars-46-hefty-bonuses-for-new-recruits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> a local Fox affiliate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNew Mexico\u2019s crime problems are unrelated to the lack of illegal aliens serving as law enforcement officers,\u201d Mehlman told the DCNF. \u201cAs in other places with high crime rates, they are due to lax enforcement policies and unaddressed social issues.
