Wyoming comes in second, and it’s sad that California comes in with 28% gun ownership. I once used my handgun when I lived in Sacramento, CA to keep would be home intruders out. They kicked in my door, but after hearing the Colt racked, they fled. Which was good for them, as getting woke up at 0430 hours I had decided to shoot whoever came through the door and was not looking for weapons (legal and Biblically acceptable). I was working for Brinks Armored at the time and in the following weekend I was one shot off perfect in my shooting test, which included drawing and shooting, running through two loads…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. has more guns than people<\/strong>, with nearly 400 million in civilian possession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this map, Visual Capitalist’s Bruno Venditti ranks<\/a> states by the highest percentage of gun ownership for adults, based on data from the Pew Research Center<\/a> compiled by Data Pandas<\/a> as of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

High Gun Ownership in Northwestern America<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Montana tops the ranking of the states with the highest percentage of gun ownership, with 66.3% of the adult population owning firearms. The state has some of the most relaxed gun control laws<\/a> in America. No state permit is required to purchase or possess a rifle, shotgun, or handgun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state is followed on our list by its neighbor, Wyoming, where 66.2% of adults own a firearm. Alaska comes in third, with 64.5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other side of the spectrum, New Jersey and Massachusetts share the lowest gun ownership rate in the country, both at 14.7%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two other states with very low ownership rates include Hawaii (14.9%) and Rhode Island (14.8%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Number of Firearms is Increasing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), U.S. gun manufacturing and imports have increased<\/a> by about 10% annually over the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
