Medical freedom advocates are documenting emerging ties between \u201cmedical assistance in dying\u201d (MAID) and organ harvesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe best use of my organs, if I\u2019m going to receive a medically assisted death, might be to not first kill me and then retrieve my organs, but to have my mode of death \u2014 as we medically consider death now \u2014 to be to retrieve my organs,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m-GTCS-l6b8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Rob Sibbald, an ethicist of the London Health Sciences Centre in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sibbald spoke on \u201cThreats to the Concept of Brain Death: Ethical Reflections\u201d at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blood.ca\/en\/research\/our-research-stories\/research-education-discovery\/critical-care-canada-forum-2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Critical Care Canada Forum<\/a> in November 2018.The event was sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blood.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Blood Services<\/a>, a tissue and organ donation group; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giftoflife.on.ca\/en\/aboutus.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trillium Gift of Life Network<\/a>, which is \u201cresponsible for delivering and coordinating organ and tissue donation and transplantation across the province\u201d of Ontario; and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdtrp.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Donation and Transplantation Research Program<\/a>, which hopes to \u201cincrease the availability of transplants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Canadian doctors have publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/euthanasia-by-organ-donation-should-we-allow-doctors-to-retrieve-peoples-organs-while-theyre-still-alive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">embraced<\/a> \u201cdeath by donation,\u201d and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/196\/3\/E79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> came out earlier this year exploring euthanasia programs such as MAID as a means of organ harvesting. Canada legalized euthanasia in 2016, and since then the number of Canadians using MAID to kill themselves has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/health\/maid-statistics-1.7408496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">significantly<\/a> increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Is the Dead Donor Rule Even Relevant?\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sibbald\u2019s biography <a href=\"https:\/\/criticalcarecanada.com\/speaker\/robert-sibbald\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a> he co-directs the \u201cCanadian unit of the International Network of the UNESCO chair in bioethics.\u201d During his speech, he suggested blurring the lines on the \u201cdead donor rule,\u201d a long-standing medical ethics <a href=\"https:\/\/cma.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/2018-11\/PD16-02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guideline<\/a> requiring that donors die of another natural cause before doctors harvest their organs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re so invested in this dead donor rule,\u201d Sibbald said. \u201cThat rule has become so ingrained in the medical community that we hold it out as a foundational principle. \u2026 And I think just as likely there are people who question that value now. And I know there\u2019s perhaps not an appetite to go there, but raising the question \u2014 is the dead donor rule even relevant?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Threats to the Concept of Brain Death - Rob Sibbald\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m-GTCS-l6b8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He suggested death may not occur at one particular moment in time, and said the \u201cbest use\u201d of organs from patients who are \u201cgoing to receive a medically assisted death\u201d could be to harvest them while the victim is alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf, to meet your definition of the dead donor rule, you have to consider me dead once you\u2019ve first put me under and you have no intention of bringing me back \u2014 well then fine, I can accept that if those are my values,\u201d Sibbald said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ethicist appeared to imply that doctors should make this decision on their own, asking forgiveness rather than permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think legally, yes, we do need an answer, and we\u2019re going to come to that,\u201d Sibbald said. \u201cBut of the possible solutions to our pragmatic issues, we can continue to allow physicians to decide and let the conflict go to the courts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Sibbald told The Federalist, \u201cNone of my previous comments should be taken as a suggestion that physicians should operate outside the bounds of existing legal or professional ethical standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRather, I have suggested that in light of legal developments we should take time to consider whether other legal or professional standards are now also in need of update or reconsideration,\u201d Sibbald said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sibbald <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMp1804276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> in a September 2018 article he co-authored for The New England Journal of Medicine that the dead donor rule follows a \u201cperceived requirement to maintain the firewall between what is done for the patient (facilitating a rapid and peaceful death) and what is done for potential organ recipients (retrieving organs that have the least possible injury). \u2026 But these principles have less merit in cases of voluntary euthanasia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some MAID recipients \u201cmay want to be sure that organ procurement won\u2019t begin before they are declared dead,\u201d others may want \u201cthe option of donating as many organs as possible and in the best condition possible,\u201d according to the article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFollowing the dead donor rule could interfere with the ability of these patients to achieve their goal,\u201d the article reads. \u201cIn such cases, it may be ethically preferable to procure the patient\u2019s organs in the same way that organs are procured from brain-dead patients (with the use of general anesthesia to ensure the patient\u2019s comfort).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But harvesting organs from patients who are still living would require an \u201camendment to the Criminal Code of Canada, which defines medical assistance in dying as the administration of a \u2018substance\u2019 by a qualified provider. By this definition,\u201d the article noted, \u201corgan retrieval is not an accepted cause of death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, patients who emphasize \u201coptimizing the number of organs they can donate are best cared for in an operative setting, where they can be fully anesthetized and where optimal organ procurement is supported,\u201d the article said \u2014 noting \u201cpatients who prefer to donate their organs after death\u201d have \u201cmore flexibility\u201d about where the euthanasia takes place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Killing Patients for Their Organs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/canada-performing-more-organ-transplants-from-maid-donors-than-any-country-in-the-world-1.6234133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top country<\/a> for organ donations via euthanasia. Still, its national health system had an organ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/news\/2023\/09\/government-of-canada-highlights-key-progress-in-support-of-organ-donation-and-transplantation.html#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shortage<\/a> in December 2022, with more than 3,700 patients awaiting a transplant.&nbsp;Health officials could be trying to close gaps like these by killing patients to harvest their organs, anti-euthanasia advocates told The Federalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disabled whistleblower Roger Foley, who says he has been pressured to accept euthanasia four times, told The Federalist Sibbald\u2019s speech appears to suggest doctors might harvest organs from live patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis statement is like, \u2018We\u2019ll just do it anyway, we\u2019ll let the physicians do it. And after they start doing it, if there\u2019s ever a complaint, then it will go to the courts, and then the courts can decide if this is right or wrong,\u2019\u201d Foley said. \u201cIt could be they\u2019re already doing euthanasia by organ harvesting, we just don\u2019t know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He called MAID a \u201csliding practice\u201d due to \u201cableism and disdain for persons with disabilities and the vulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis sliding leads not only towards expansion of eligibility criteria, but also towards euthanasia organ harvesting methods,\u201d Foley said. \u201cThe human race is not mature enough to have euthanasia and assisted suicide legalized anywhere. The focus should be on improving supports for vulnerable persons to live and improving palliative care at end of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heather Hancock, another disabled patient who says doctors pressured her to accept MAID, told The Federalist euthanasia victims are another means for doctors to obtain organs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSuddenly organ transplants have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cihi.ca\/en\/corr-organ-donors-2013-to-2022-quick-stats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gone up<\/a> since MAID\u2019s been involved. New patients are eligible to be donors,\u201d Hancock said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also said killing patients helps fund Canada\u2019s public health care system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMAID is a huge money-making business \u2014 now they\u2019re saving money on future healthcare,\u201d Hancock said. \u201cThey\u2019re literally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/health-care-reform\/report\/how-socialized-medicine-hurts-canadians-and-leaves-them-worse-financially\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denying<\/a> us healthcare treatment and offering us MAID instead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors attempted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jccf.ca\/brandon-langhjelm-tribute\/\">withdraw<\/a> life support from one patient multiple times without his consent, according to the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms. One afternoon when the patient\u2019s mother was in the hospital, the doctors denied him oxygen above 60 percent, according to JCCF. The same day, he died. The patient had been involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jccf.ca\/brandon-langhjelm-tribute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advocating<\/a> for religious and medical freedom. In a similar case, a former Canadian politician said he had to \u201cflee with his family to the United States\u201d because doctors told him they would remove his son who drowned from life support, after which \u201chis organs could then be \u2018harvested,\u2019\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/former-quebec-politician-says-canadian-hospital-wanted-to-harvest-the-organs-and-kill-his-young-son\/?utm_source=daily-canada-2025-01-03&amp;utm_medium=email\">according<\/a> to LifeSiteNews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hancock said she expects the situation to worsen as restraints on MAID loosen over time. According to The Christian Post, Ontario\u2019s Trillium Gift of Life Network \u2014 one of the groups sponsoring Sibbald\u2019s speech about premortem harvesting \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/voices\/canadas-doctor-assisted-euthanasia-ripe-for-organ-donation-abuse.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tells<\/a> doctors to ask MAID patients about obtaining their organs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ontario, euthanasia deaths <a href=\"https:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/medically-assisted-deaths-prove-a-growing-boon-to-organ-donation-in-ontario\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boosted<\/a> organ donations in 2020. In Quebec, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/quebec-organ-donors-maid-1.7098003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14 percent<\/a> of organ donors were MAID victims in 2022. One <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6546574\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> in the Canadian Medical Association Journal includes a diagram of the MAID to organ harvesting pipeline. This was from 2019, when euthanasia was only allowed for those with foreseeable deaths. Now, doctors can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyingwithdignity.ca\/end-of-life-support\/get-the-facts-on-maid\/#:~:text=Learn%20more%20about%20Canada's%20assisted%20dying%20law.&amp;text=As%20of%20March%2017%2C%202021,assistance%20in%20dying%20(MAID).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">end the lives of patients<\/a> with unforeseeable deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"785\" height=\"997\" src=\"https:\/\/jasonsblog.ddns.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-16.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10229\" style=\"width:600px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jasonsblog.ddns.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-16.png 785w, https:\/\/jasonsblog.ddns.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-16-236x300.png 236w, https:\/\/jasonsblog.ddns.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-16-768x975.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 785px) 100vw, 785px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A chart showing the pipeline from MAID to organ harvestingImage CreditJames Downar et al. | Canadian Medical Association Journal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Angelina Ireland is executive director of the Delta Hospice Society, an end-of-life care facility that the Canadian government <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2020HLTH0047-000328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shut down<\/a> and then took over for not terminating its patients. The group now advocates against euthanasia. Ireland said the dead donor rule is \u201call in question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are now talking about \u2018pre-mortem\u2019 interventions to harvest organs of MAID recipients,\u201d Ireland told The Federalist. \u201cThat\u2019s the question \u2014 what the h-ll is going on?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ireland said there is \u201cplenty of room for abuse.\u201d She cited the book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/17\/books\/the-red-market-by-scott-carney-on-human-parts-trafficking-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Red Market<\/a>,\u201d which traced human trafficking and organ harvesting around the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can get big, big money on the world market,\u201d she said.&nbsp;\u201cWe have opened ourselves up to some horrific stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organ trafficking rises from a \u201cdesperate need for organ transplantation surgeries\u201d and takes the form of a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/lop.parl.ca\/sites\/PublicWebsite\/default\/en_CA\/ResearchPublications\/202083E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lucrative<\/a>, transnational criminal enterprise,\u201d according to Canada\u2019s Library of Parliament. Trafficked organs constitute up to 10 percent of organ transplants worldwide, the study says. A kidney can range from $50,000 to $120,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPurchasers are normally wealthy persons from developed nations such as Canada,\u201d according to the library. The network often <a href=\"https:\/\/lop.parl.ca\/sites\/PublicWebsite\/default\/en_CA\/ResearchPublications\/202083E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">includes<\/a> a broker between buyer and seller, a \u201clocal recruiter,\u201d and \u201cmedical professionals and local hospitals performing the illicit organ removal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is the&nbsp;\u2018Canadian cull\u2019&nbsp;\u2014 a systematic elimination of the weak, sick, old, and vulnerable via the state euthanasia program called MAID,\u201d Ireland said. \u201cThe Government&nbsp;has taken the most sacred right from its citizens, the power to kill them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said while some Americans complain about private healthcare, socialized medicine also has serious <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/12\/30\/universal-health-care-ends-with-the-government-telling-you-to-kill-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn a public health-care system, there are a whole new set of mafioso who are deciding to take a person\u2019s body and soul,\u201d Ireland said. \u201cThere is no recourse and no justice.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I mentioned MAiD in the last post, and this gem popped up.
